Overview
EN 13042-1:2007/FprA1 is a CEN draft amendment addressing safety requirements for gob feeders - the feeding mechanisms used in the manufacture, treatment and processing of hollow glass. The document updates Part 1 of the EN 13042 series and focuses on significant hazards and risk reduction measures relevant to gob feeders during commissioning, operation and maintenance. It also clarifies the standard’s relationship to the EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) via informative annexes.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and hazards: Specifies hazards, hazardous situations and reasonably foreseeable misuse relevant to gob feeders. (Noise is not treated as a primary significant hazard but requirements for noise information and measurement are included.)
- Control systems and stop functions:
- Stop command latching until manual reset in accordance with EN 1037; related control parts shall meet performance level c of EN ISO 13849-1:2008.
- Emergency-stop equipment to EN ISO 13850:2008 with stop categories per EN 60204-1.
- Safeguarding and guards: Hazardous transmission and moving parts (except shears) shall be protected per EN 953 and EN 294; interlocked movable guards’ control parts require PL c (EN ISO 13849-1).
- Electrical and energy isolation:
- Electrical equipment to EN 60204-1.
- Lockable energy supply disconnects (master switches, isolation valves) and provisions for pressure dissipation per EN 982/EN 983.
- Gob-loading interruption and shear interlocks: Automatic interruption measures and manual actuators to allow delivery interruption; associated control parts to meet PL c.
- Noise declaration and measurement:
- Manufacturer must declare A‑weighted emission sound pressure level per EN ISO 4871.
- Measurement methods referenced: EN ISO 11201, EN ISO 11202, EN ISO 11204 (EN ISO 11204 recommended).
- Measurement conditions and microphone positions are specified; uncertainties must be stated.
- Documentation and instructions: Instruction handbook must include noise data, operating procedures for hazardous breakdowns/blockages, spare-part specifications affecting safety, and full manufacturer identification (including year of construction and machine designation).
- Testing and verification: Routine visual, functional and measuring tests for specific safety clauses (table of individual tests provided).
Applications and users
This standard is primarily used by:
- Machine manufacturers and designers of gob feeders and hollow-glass production equipment,
- Safety engineers and compliance officers responsible for CE marking and conformity to the Machinery Directive,
- Plant operators and maintenance personnel implementing safe operation procedures,
- Notified bodies and testing organizations performing conformity and routine tests.
EN 13042-1 helps ensure gob feeder safety, improves machine integration with glass-forming lines, and supports regulatory compliance.
