This European Standard specifies requirements and test methods for consumer fitted finger protection devices intended to be mounted on hinged doors in the domestic environment inside buildings in order to prevent crushing injuries to children as a result of the door closing.
A finger protection product is based on at least one of three protection methods: hazard shielding, shut prevention or shut controlling.
NOTE 1 Products intended to maintain the door in a fixed position and friction hinges are not covered by this European Standard.
NOTE 2 Finger protection devices intended to be installed by professionals or that are an integral part of the door system are beyond the scope of this European Standard.

Overview
EN 16654:2015 - "Child protective products - Consumer fitted finger protection devices for doors - Safety requirements and test methods" is a European Standard published by CEN. It specifies safety requirements and test methods for consumer‑fitted finger protection devices mounted on hinged doors in domestic indoor environments to prevent crushing injuries to children when doors close. The standard covers devices based on three protection methods: hazard shielding, shut prevention, and shut controlling. It excludes products that only maintain a door in a fixed position, friction hinges, and devices installed by professionals or built into the door system.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Protection methods defined:
- Hazard shielding (protects hinge gap)
- Shut prevention (maintains a gap at the handle edge)
- Shut controlling (controls deceleration to prevent sudden shutting)
- Mechanical function & structural integrity: Devices must not crack, break, deform permanently or disengage under defined mechanical tests and must remain functional afterwards.
- Effectiveness: Devices must protect from the bottom of the door to at least 1 800 mm height, be effective across permissible opening angles, and fit doors of at least 40 mm thickness (unless stated otherwise).
- Specific test types: Accessibility and deformation tests for hazard shielding; static strength for shut prevention; dynamic strength for shut controlling. Small part detachment tests require parts falling from ≤ 1 500 mm not to fit wholly into the prescribed small‑parts cylinder.
- Child appeal: Devices shall not be child‑appealing (no toy‑like shapes, sounds, lights, etc.).
- Sharp edges & materials: Accessible edges must be rounded or chamfered; manufacturers must declare suitable door types, materials and fixings.
- Information & marking: Mandatory point‑of‑sale information, full user instructions in the country language(s), mounting guidance (e.g., mount hazard shields from the bottom up to 1 800 mm), maintenance checks and replacement warnings.
Applications and who uses this standard
EN 16654:2015 is used by:
- Manufacturers and product designers of consumer finger protection devices to design and validate products against safety requirements.
- Testing laboratories and certification bodies to perform standardized safety and durability tests.
- Retailers and product safety officers to ensure point‑of‑sale information and instructions comply with legal and consumer safety expectations.
