Overview

EN 14316-1:2004 is the CEN specification for in‑situ thermal insulation formed from expanded perlite (EP) products - the product requirements before installation. This harmonised Part 1 covers marketed, loose‑fill and bonded expanded perlite materials used in roofs, ceilings, walls and floors and defines product characteristics, test procedures, conformity evaluation, marking and labelling. It supports CE marking for perlite insulation placed on the market (the installed‑product rules are addressed in Part 2).

Covered product types include Perlite Aggregate (EPA), Coated Perlite (EPC), Bitumen Coated Perlite (EPB), Hydrophobic Perlite (EPH) and Premixed Perlite (EPM).

Key topics and requirements

  • Thermal performance: Thermal conductivity (λ) and resistance (R) measured per EN 12667; declared values are determined as 90 % fractiles (λ90/90) at a reference mean temperature of 10 °C and declared with defined rounding rules.
  • Loose bulk density: Measured to EN 1097‑3, declared in 1 kg/m3 steps; production tolerance ±15 %.
  • Particle size distribution: Determined by EN 933‑1; size designated by sieve limits with undersize ≤ 15 % and oversize ≤ 10 % by mass.
  • Water repellency: For hydrophobic perlite (EPH) measured per Annex E; a minimum repellency of 175 ml is specified.
  • Mechanical properties: Crushing resistance for load‑bearing applications tested per EN 13055‑1 and expressed in N/mm2.
  • Reaction to fire: Expanded perlite products are classified as A1 (non‑combustible) without testing (organic content must be ≤ 1 % to remain in scope).
  • Durability / ageing: Thermal properties and compressive strength are considered stable; settlement is negligible for perlite fill.
  • Conformity, marking and labelling: Procedures for initial type testing (ITT), factory production control and declaration of performance are included.

EN 14316-1:2004 is a European Standard that specifies the requirements for expanded perlite products used for in-situ installation in buildings. This Part 1 of the standard focuses on the specification for these insulation products before installation. It covers five different product types: Perlite Aggregate, Coated Perlite, Bitumen Coated Perlite, Hydrophobic Perlite, and Premixed Perlite. The standard describes the characteristics of the products, provides testing procedures, evaluation of conformity, marking, and labeling guidelines. It's important to note that this standard does not specify the required level of a property for a specific application. The required levels can be found in regulations or other non-conflicting standards. Additionally, this standard does not cover factory-made insulation products made with expanded perlite in formed shapes or boards. While these products can improve the performance of buildings in terms of airborne sound insulation or sound absorption, their primary purpose is thermal insulation.
