Overview
EN 30-2-1:2024 - "Domestic cooking appliances burning gas - Part 2-1: Rational use of energy - General" (CEN) specifies requirements and type-test methods to assess the rational use of energy of domestic gas cooking appliances. It aligns with EN 30-1-1:2021+A1:2023 and supports conformity assessment under European rules. The standard focuses on measuring and verifying the energy efficiency of burners, gas hobs and the oven’s maintenance heat input under defined laboratory conditions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Type testing methods and performance requirements for energy use of gas-burning domestic cooking appliances.
- Performance characteristics covered:
- Efficiency of uncovered burners: For burners with nominal heat input ≥ 0.8 kW the measured efficiency must be at least 52% (calculated per the standard’s formulae).
- Efficiency of covered burners: Minimum 25% (from cold) and 35% (from hot).
- Gas hob efficiency: Determined as the average efficiency of applicable burners.
- Maintenance heat input of the oven: Maximum allowed maintenance heat input Cv given by Cv = 0.93 + 0.035 × v (kW), where v is useful oven volume in dm³ (as defined in EN 15181).
- Test methods and conditions:
- Standardized pans (aluminium with matt base), lids and prescribed pan diameters/masses of water (Table 1) are used.
- Pre‑heating and test sequences: pan preheat, water initial temperature 20 ± 1 °C, stop measurement when water reaches 90 ± 1 °C; ambient temperature 23 ± 2 °C.
- Measurement accuracy requirements (water temperature sensor ≤ 0.1 °C) and gas measurement corrections (pressure, temperature, calorific value) are specified.
- Calculations: Efficiency is calculated from the measured gas energy consumed versus the theoretical energy absorbed by the pan/water (formulas given).
Applications and who uses it
- Appliance manufacturers: design and verify energy performance of gas hobs and ovens during product development.
- Accredited test laboratories: perform type testing for compliance and validation against EN 30-2-1:2024.
- Certification and conformity bodies: assess compliance with EU requirements (informative Annex ZA links to Regulation (EU) 2016/426).
- Product specifiers, procurement teams and energy-efficiency consultants: compare and select appliances based on standardized efficiency metrics.
- Standards writers and regulators: align national rules and interoperability with CEN member states.
