Overview

EN ISO 7278-2:2022/prA1:2025 is a CEN-adopted amendment to ISO 7278-2:2022 - Petroleum measurement systems - Part 2: Pipe prover design, calibration and operation. This draft amendment (Amendment 1) updates procedures for prover leakage checks, sphere (displacer) inspection and sizing, measurement uncertainty guidance, and documentation requirements during calibration. It is intended to improve repeatability and traceability of volumetric prover calibrations used in custody transfer and process measurement of liquid hydrocarbons.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Pre-calibration leak checks: Systems must be checked for leakage before calibration. This includes operation and leak testing of four-way valves and seal leakage tests for piston provers. A sphere displacer should be safely withdrawn for inspection.
  • Sphere inspection and sizing (new Clause 6.5.4):
    • Inspect new and removed spheres for bulges, flats, cuts, abrasions, wear, degradation or softening; check expiry date for new spheres.
    • Record an “as found” diameter when extracting spheres.
    • Recommended procedure: over-inflate and pressurize spheres to detect seam/pinhole leaks, then vent and set to required inflation.
    • Inflation adjustment and measurement guidance: vent air with valve vertical; measure across at least two perpendicular diameters (one across filling valve(s)); report the smallest measured diameter.
    • Measurement methods allowed: outside micrometer/calliper (with calibrated length standard), slip rings sized by manufacturer, or a flat diameter/circumference tape. Tools must be calibrated with appropriate uncertainty.
    • Ovality limit: difference between largest and smallest diameter should not exceed 1% of nominal diameter (per API MPMS Chapter 4 reference); larger differences indicate a worn sphere.
    • Guidance on measurement resolution/uncertainty: aim for discrimination within 0.25% of nominal; example for a 150 mm sphere - uncertainty < 0.4 mm diameter (≈1 mm circumference).
    • Note on large spheres: account for distortion under their own weight during measurement.
    • Operational impact: underinflation can cause leakage; overinflation can cause pressure loss, judder and poor switch actuation.
  • Calibration reporting (Annex H1 addition): Prover must be in good operational condition during calibration; any temporary modifications (e.g., capping leaking drains, manually assisting valves) must be recorded and included in the calibration report.

Applications and users

  • Useful for custody transfer measurement, pipeline operators, terminal and refinery measurement teams, calibration laboratories, and equipment manufacturers.
  • Applies where pipe provers, piston provers and spherical displacers are used to verify volumetric flow meters for petroleum and liquid hydrocarbon products.
  • Helps ensure traceable calibration, consistent prover performance and improved measurement quality for regulatory and commercial transactions.

Related standards

  • ISO 7278-2:2022 (parent standard - pipe prover design, calibration and operation)

Part 2:
Pipe prover design, calibration and operation
AMENDMENT 1
1) Clause 11.2: add a paragraph to the end of clause 11.2.
Prior to commencing the calibration, the system should be checked for leakage. If appropriate the operation
and leak checking of a four-way valve, or a seal leakage test of a piston prover, should be carried out. A
sphere displacer should be withdrawn safely for inspection (clause 13.3). When removed, a sphere can
be positioned on a clean dry and dirt-free surface in a location suitable for measurement to the required
accuracy. It can then be inspected for condition and inflation diameter measured (clause 6.5.4).
2) Clause 6.5.2: -Delete paras 8 to 11
3) Insert new clause 6.5.4
6.5.4  Sphere inspection and sizing
New and spheres which have been removed from a prover should be inspected in the same way. Removal of
a sphere and initial inspection should follow the guidance given in clause 13.3.
