prEN ISO 19085-8 is a draft CEN/ISO safety standard for wide belt sanding machines and surface treating machines capable of continuous production use. It specifies safety requirements and protective measures for design, controls, safeguarding, tests and instructions so these woodworking machines can be operated, adjusted, maintained, transported and scrapped with foreseeable misuse taken into account.

What does prEN ISO 19085-8 specify?

prEN ISO 19085-8 covers the safety requirements for wide belt sanding machines and surface treating machines used on flat workpieces of even thickness, such as panels, beams and frames. It applies to machines intended for continuous production use and to selected additional working units and devices fitted to those machines.

The document organizes the requirements into four main clauses: controls in Clause 4, mechanical hazards in Clause 5, other hazards in Clause 6, and information for use in Clause 7. Annex A lists the significant hazards, Annex B summarizes the required performance levels, and Annexes C to G provide the test methods used to verify specific safety functions and protective devices.

AnnexWhat it covers
AList of significant hazards
BPerformance level required for safety functions
CBrake test
DImpact test for guards
ENoise test code
FAnti-kickback test
GTest for anti-kickback devices of finger type
ZARelationship with Regulation (EU) 2023/1230

What are the key requirements of prEN ISO 19085-8?

prEN ISO 19085-8 sets out the safety measures that matter most for control systems, guarding, workpiece retention, ejection protection, laser use, noise, dust and user information. In practice, the standard is about preventing unexpected motion, keeping the operator away from moving tools, making sure the workpiece is supported and clamped, and verifying those measures by test.

Controls and safe stopping

Clause 4 requires the control system to meet the safety-related performance levels summarized in Annex B. This matters because the control logic itself is treated as a safety function, not just a convenience feature.

The machine needs emergency stop controls at the main control panel and at manual loading or unloading positions, and also near each hold-to-run control device where relevant. Clause 4 also requires safe stopping behavior, including retraction of processing units to their rest position, and for machines with a laser surface treating unit, cut-off of laser energy on safe stop.

Start functions are tightly interlocked. The cutterblock unit and multi blade unit may leave their rest position only when their rotating elements are running, and the laser surface treating unit may activate only when feed is running and the workpiece is detected under the unit. For a buyer or engineer, this means the machine design must prove that motion and process energy cannot start in the wrong condition.

Guarding, access prevention and anti-kickback

Clause 5 focuses on the moving parts and process hazards. Fixed guards must prevent access to running processing units, and where maintenance or setting access is needed, movable guards with interlocking are required. If rundown time is longer than 2 s, guard locking is also required.

The in-feed opening has its own trip device requirements, including stopping the feed belt and retracting processing units when actuated. The standard also sets geometry and force-related requirements for the trip device, which means the design must be checked against the machine opening and workpiece behavior, not only fitted as a general protection.

Ejection and kickback are handled with guard classes and anti-kickback devices. Cutterblock units and multi blade units have specific guard and anti-kickback provisions, while other processing units use class B guards for direct ejection protection. Annex D verifies guard impact resistance when the material or thickness is outside the listed cases, and Annexes F and G verify the anti-kickback devices.

Tool design, brake performance and workpiece support

Clause 5 also requires compliant cutterblocks and saw blades, and it requires loosening to be prevented during start-up, running, run-down and braking. The tool brake provisions are verified by the brake test in Annex C.

Workpiece support and clamping are not treated as secondary details. The machine needs a pressure roller or pressure pad before and after processing units, and the relevant clamping position must be interlocked with the processing unit position. Clause 5.10 also requires over-thickness protection and, for certain units, end stops to prevent contact or limit grooving depth.

Noise, dust, laser and ergonomics

Clause 6 requires noise emission measurement and declaration using Annex E. It also requires extraction for chips and dust from each processing unit, with the laser surface treating unit needing a dedicated extraction outlet. For the laser function, accessible parts must be laser class 1, and access to higher-class laser parts must be prevented with guards and interlocked energy cut-off.

The clause also addresses ergonomics: the machine must show workpiece thickness clearly, and manual loading or unloading machines have floor-height limits for the workpiece support. For a plant manager, this affects both safe use and operator fatigue.

Information for use

Clause 7 requires markings and instructions that support safe operation. The marking includes rotation-direction arrows, and laser-equipped machines need the accessible laser radiation warning symbol. The instruction handbook must cover foreseeable misuse, residual risks, inspection of anti-kickback devices, permitted workpiece length, permitted cutterblock types, maintenance restrictions for the laser unit, and connection to a dedicated extraction system.

What terms does prEN ISO 19085-8 define?

  • Wide belt sanding machine - A machine that calibrates or sands flat workpieces with integrated feed and sanding belts positioned above or below the workpiece level.
  • Surface treating machine - A machine that treats the surface of flat workpieces with an integrated feed and one of the listed brushing or texturing units, but no sanding belt unit.
  • Cutterblock unit - A cylindrical processing unit with blades or inserts that cuts in parallel to the feed direction and against the feed.
  • Multi blade unit - A grooving unit with saw blades mounted at preset distances on a shaft above the workpiece.
  • Safety-related part of control system (SRP/CS) - The part of the control system that performs a safety function, such as interlocking or safe stopping.
  • Performance level (PL) - The level used in the standard to state how reliable a safety function must be.
  • Laser surface treating unit - A unit that finishes the workpiece surface by laser technology.

Who uses prEN ISO 19085-8?

prEN ISO 19085-8 is used by machine designers, manufacturers, suppliers and importers of woodworking machines. It is also relevant to quality managers, safety engineers, conformity assessment teams, regulators, market surveillance bodies and maintenance providers.

ISO/DIS 19085-8:2026(en)
Introduction
The ISO 19085 series provides technical safety requirements for the design and construction of
woodworking machinery, as well as for the content of the relevant instruction handbook. It concerns
designers, manufacturers, suppliers and importers of the machines specified in the Scope.
This document is a type-C standard as defined in ISO 12100.
This document is of relevance, in particular, for the following stakeholder groups representing the market
players with regard to machinery safety:
— machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— health and safety bodies (e.g. regulators, accident prevention organisations, market surveillance).
Others can be affected by the level of machinery safety achieved with the means of the document by the
above-mentioned stakeholder groups:
— machine users/employers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— machine users/employees (e.g. trade unions, organizations for people with special needs);
— service providers, e.g. for maintenance (small, medium and large enterprises);
— consumers (in case of machinery intended for use by consumers).
The above-mentioned stakeholder groups have been given the possibility to participate in the drafting
process of this document.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events are
covered are indicated in the Scope of this document.
When requirements of this type-C standard are different from those which are stated in type-A or type-B
standards (as defined in ISO 12100), the requirements of this type-C standard take precedence over the
requirements of the other standards for machines that have been designed and built according to the
requirements of this type-C standard.
In this document, a subclause can refer to the same subclause of ISO 19085-1:2026 or give specific
requirements or both.
