Introduction
The ISO 19085 series of International Standards provides technical safety requirements for the design and
construction of woodworking machinery, as well as for the content of the relevant instruction handbook. It
concerns designers, manufacturers, suppliers and importers of the machines specified in the Scope.
This document is a type-C standard as defined in ISO 12100.
This document is of relevance, in particular, for the following stakeholder groups representing the market
players with regard to machinery safety:
— machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organisations, market surveillance etc.)
Others can be affected by the level of machinery safety achieved with the means of the document by the
above-mentioned stakeholder groups:
— machine users/employers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— machine users/employees (e.g. trade unions, organizations for people with special needs);
— service providers, e.g. for maintenance (small, medium and large enterprises);
— consumers (in case of machinery intended for use by consumers).
The above-mentioned stakeholder groups have been given the possibility to participate in the drafting
process of this document.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events are
covered are indicated in the Scope of this document.
When requirements of this type-C standard are different from those which are stated in type-A or type-B
standards (as defined in ISO 12100), the requirements of this type-C standard take precedence over the
requirements of the other standards for machines that have been designed and built according to the
requirements of this type-C standard.
The full set of requirements for a particular type of woodworking machine are those given in the part of
ISO 19085 applicable to that type, together with the relevant requirements from ISO 19085-1:2021, to the
extent specified in the Scope of the applicable part of ISO 19085.
As far as possible, the safety requirements of parts of the ISO 19085 series refer to the relevant clauses
of ISO 19085-1. Each part includes replacements and additions to the common requirements given in
ISO 19085-1.
All parts of the ISO 19085 series have the same structure, so that reference to ISO 19085-1 is made always
and only from and to the same subclause number, last indent.
Clauses 1 to 3 are specific to each part and, therefore, are distinct from ISO 19085-1:2021, Clauses 1 to 3.
For Clauses 4 to 7 and the annexes, each subclause in ISO 19085-1:2021, is cited as:
— confirmed as a whole;
— confirmed with additions;
— excluded in total; or
— replaced with specific text.
This is indicated by one of the following possible statements:
— “ISO 19085-1:2021, [subclause/Annex], applies.”;
vii

The EN ISO 19085-6:2024 standard is a comprehensive guideline specifically addressing the safety requirements for single spindle vertical moulding machines, commonly referred to as toupie. Its scope is focused on machines designed for continuous production, ensuring they meet critical safety measures during operation, adjustment, and maintenance, as specified by the manufacturer. By systematically identifying significant hazards associated with the intended use of these woodworking machines, the standard enhances operational safety and reduces risks associated with the use of such equipment. One of the key strengths of this standard is its thorough approach to addressing various hazards, as laid out in Annex A. This detailed consideration allows manufacturers and operators to recognize and mitigate potential dangers not only during normal operation but also during transport, assembly, dismantling, and scrapping phases. This holistic approach reinforces the importance of safety at every stage of the machine's lifecycle. Moreover, the document's relevance is accentuated by its applicability to a wide array of additional working units that can be fitted to these woodworking machines. From vertically adjustable arbors to devices for changing the direction of spindle rotation, the standard accounts for diverse operational setups. This inclusivity ensures that a broad spectrum of toupie configurations can be safely assessed under the established safety parameters, ultimately contributing to a safer working environment. However, it is important to note that the standard explicitly excludes certain machine types, such as those equipped with outboard bearings or powered movements of extension tables. By delineating the scope of applicability, the standard ensures focused and relevant safety measures for its intended audience while avoiding ambiguity about which machines fall under its jurisdiction. Additionally, the fact that it does not apply to machines intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres or those manufactured before its publication date underlines the evolving nature of safety standards in the woodworking industry. This aspect reinforces the standard's commitment to contemporary safety practices, making it applicable to current market technologies. In summary, EN ISO 19085-6:2024 serves as a crucial document for ensuring the safe operation of single spindle vertical moulding machines, aptly addressing significant hazards, operational scenarios, and adaptations for additional working units, which strengthens its relevance in today's woodworking sector.
