Aerospace series - Paints and varnishes - Corrosion resistant chromate-free two component cold curing primer - Part 004: High corrosion and fluid resistance with surface preparation tolerance
This standard specifies the basic requirements for a two component, cold curing, chromate-free epoxy or polyurethane, high corrosion and fluid resistant primer with improved tolerance to the standard of surface preparation which can be used with or without a finish for aerospace applications.
The properties specified in this standard are obtained on defined aluminium alloy test pieces prepared in accordance with EN 3837, process D and ISO 3270. The ability of the material to be used for a specific application (e.g. alternative substrate, alternative primer, specific drying conditions etc.) shall be determined by supplementary tests to confirm that the requirements of this standard are met.

General Information
Overview
EN 2436-004:2006 is a CEN (ASD-STAN) aerospace standard that defines the basic requirements for a two-component, cold-curing, chromate-free primer intended for high corrosion and fluid resistance with improved tolerance to surface preparation. It applies to epoxy or polyurethane chemistries and is intended for aerospace applications where a primer may be used with or without a finish. Test results in the standard are based on aluminium alloy test pieces prepared per EN 3837 (process D) and conditioned per ISO 3270.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Product types: Classified by reaction chemistry:
- Type A: Epoxy (epoxy resin + amino activator)
- Type B: Polyurethane (hydroxyl resin + polyisocyanate)
- Film and application: Typical dry film thickness of 20 ± 5 µm; application and storage conditions referenced to EN 3840.
- Batch release vs qualification:
- Batch release: tests marked with * in the standard’s tables.
- Qualification: all tests in Tables 1–5 must be performed.
- Physical/chemical properties: requirements for viscosity, pot life, non-volatile matter, VOC limits, fineness of grind (≤ 30 µm), density, flash point and surface/dry times.
- Mechanical performance: adhesion (classification 0), scratch resistance (≥ 1 800 g), mandrel bend, slow deformation and impact tests with no detachment or cracking.
- Environmental resistance:
- Heat: 150 °C for 24 h (specific deformation limits)
- Cold: –40 °C for 24 h
- Corrosion resistance: neutral salt spray up to 3 000 h (primer + finish), alternate immersion 1 500 h, filiform corrosion 1 000 h
- Fluid resistance: exposure to tri-n-butyl phosphate for 168 h and water for 168 h at 40 °C with no blistering or lifting
- Surface preparation tolerance: properties determined on defined aluminium substrates; alternative substrates or changed surface prep require supplementary testing.
Applications and who uses it
- Aerospace OEMs and suppliers: specifying primers for airframe components, closures and secondary structures.
- Coatings manufacturers: product development, qualification and batch release testing.
- MRO (maintenance, repair & overhaul) organisations: selecting chromate-free primers with robust fluid and corrosion resistance and forgiving surface-prep requirements.
- Materials engineers and procurement teams: ensuring compliance for durability, environmental and safety (chromate-free) goals.
- Certification and quality teams: using the standard for acceptance criteria, test protocols and documentation.
