Overview
EN 13445-2:2021+A1:2023/prA2 is a European standard developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) that specifies the material requirements for unfired pressure vessels. This part 2 focuses explicitly on the steel materials used in the construction of unfired pressure vessels, critical for ensuring structural integrity and safety under operating conditions.
This amendment updates the 2021 standard with modifications related to normative references, material requirements, tensile and yield strength specifications for pressure and non-pressure parts, and guidelines for impact testing at low temperatures. Other metallic materials like spheroidal graphite cast iron, aluminium, nickel, copper, and titanium have or will have separate parts within the EN 13445 series.
Key Topics
Material Specifications
The document reinforces requirements for steel products used in pressure vessel manufacture. It covers chemical composition and mechanical properties such as tensile and yield strength, particularly focusing on elevated and ambient temperatures.Yield and Tensile Strength for Non-Pressure Parts
The amendment details updated procedures and reduction factors for determining design stresses in parts such as supporting lugs and skirts that are not exposed to internal pressure but must still maintain adequate strength.Material Groups and Reference Thicknesses
EN 13445-2 includes comprehensive tables grouping steels and relevant mechanical properties to prevent brittle fracture. It lists reference thicknesses and temperature limits for different steel grades and product forms like plates, strips, pipes, bars, and castings.Impact Testing at Low Temperatures
The standard specifies stricter impact testing requirements for applications operating at temperatures below -60 °C, indicating that for such severe conditions, impact tests must be conducted at -40 °C or lower, depending on material thickness and design temperature.Harmonized vs. Non-Harmonized Materials
For materials without harmonized European standards, the document provides specific rules ensuring safety and compliance within the pressure vessel framework.
Applications
EN 13445-2 is essential for industries that rely on pressure vessels for process containment, such as:
Petrochemical and Chemical Plants
Ensuring proper steel selection aligns with operational temperatures and pressures, optimizing safety and performance.Power Generation
Use in boilers and heat exchangers demands high-quality, reliable unfired vessels built from conforming steel grades.Food and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Where clean and safe vessel materials meet rigorous standards for pressure equipment.Cryogenic and Low-Temperature Applications
The amendment's emphasis on impact testing at low temperatures supports safe vessel operation in liquefied gas storage and transport.
This standard guides engineers, designers, manufacturers, and inspectors to select materials that comply with current European safety regulations and ensure the longevity and reliability of unfired pressure vessels.

4 Modifications to B.2.3, “Method 2”
Add the following text before Table B.2-13 in B.2.3.1:
"For applications that fall below the dotted line in the Figures B.2-2 and B.2-4 (T below -60 °C with
R
T = 0 °C), steels shall be impact tested at -40 °C or at lower temperatures.".
A
Replace Figures B.2-2 and B.2-4 in B.2.3.3 with the following:
“

B
For applications that fall below the dotted line (T below -60 °C with T = 0 °C), test temperature T shall

not be higher than -40 °C independent of thickness e .

If any combination of thickness e and T result in a lower test temperature T as -40 °C, the lower test
