Method of polishing specimens prior to the measurement of slip and skid resistance

This Technical Specification describes a laboratory method for polishing paving units using a flat-bed polishing machine prior to the measurement of slip and skid resistance to evaluate the durability of this characteristic. This Technical Specification may not be applicable to profiled paving units: for these types of units the method of polishing does not reflect the polishing in practice.

Overview

CEN/TS 12633:2014 - Method of polishing specimens prior to the measurement of slip and skid resistance - is a laboratory Technical Specification from CEN that defines an accelerated polishing procedure for paving units before slip and skid resistance testing. The procedure evaluates the durability of surface friction by reproducing polishing caused by traffic abrasion using a flat‑bed polishing machine and defined abrasive media. Note: this method may not be applicable to profiled paving units where laboratory polishing does not reflect in‑service wear.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Purpose: Prepare paving specimens consistently so subsequent slip/skid resistance tests (e.g., pendulum) reflect a reproducible, polished condition.
  • Apparatus: Flat‑bed polishing machine with a machined metal lap (~600 mm diameter) and a natural rubber annulus; sample holders; emery feed mechanisms and water feed.
  • Rubber annulus: Hardness 60–75 IRHD (ISO 48), conditioned to ~20 °C and replaced/validated when necessary.
  • Loading and contact stress: Specimens loaded to give a contact stress of (2 250 ± 50) N/m² over the prepared contact area (example: total mass ≈ 2.924 kg for 150 mm × 85 mm).
  • Polishing media:
    • Fresh corn emery with defined grading (several sieve pass limits).
    • Fresh emery flour (≈95 % passing 50 µm).
    • Media are single‑use.
  • Polishing cycle:
    • Corn emery applied at ≈ 20 g/min for 700 revolutions with a low water feed (e.g., ~6 ml/min).
    • Rinse, then emery flour at ≈ 2 g/min for 700 revolutions with reduced water to form a paste.
  • Specimen preparation: Test area typically 150 × 80–90 mm, thickness 30–85 mm, chamfered edges (≥3 mm, ~45°) to allow abrasive access; bonding allowed where surface area is small.
  • Validation & control: Monthly control with a reference material (Annex A) and re‑validation when rubber annulus or abrasive batches change. If reference pendulum values drift outside range, equipment/procedure must be checked.
  • Health & safety: Emphasises dust extraction, respiratory protection and electrical safety in wet conditions.

Applications and users

  • Test laboratories performing slip and skid resistance assessments.
  • Paving unit manufacturers and QA/QC teams validating surface durability.
  • Highway authorities, road safety engineers and specifiers who require reproducible pre‑test polishing to assess friction durability.
  • Research organizations studying pavement surface wear and friction performance.
