Overview
EN ISO 276:2021 (ISO 276:2019) specifies requirements and corresponding test methods for linseed stand oil (polymerized linseed oil) used as a binder in paints and varnishes. The standard defines five viscosity grades (from extra‑low to extra‑high) and gives limits for key quality parameters - viscosity, acid value, saponification value, turbidity and colour - together with the accepted test methods and reporting requirements.
Key topics and requirements
- Five viscosity types (typical classification at 20 °C):
- Stand oil 1 (extra‑low): ≤ 1 Pa·s
- Stand oil 2 (low): >1 to ≤4 Pa·s
- Stand oil 3 (medium): >4 to ≤8 Pa·s
- Stand oil 4 (high): >8 to ≤16 Pa·s
- Stand oil 5 (extra‑high): >16 Pa·s
(Equivalent graded limits are provided for 23 °C and 25 °C; viscosities measured per ISO 12058‑1.)
- Acid value (expressed as mg KOH/g): maximum limits vary by type (e.g., ~6 to 20 mg KOH/g depending on grade). Test methods: ISO 660 or ISO 2114.
- Saponification value: required range 186–200 mg KOH/g (ISO 3657 or ISO 3681).
- Colour: measured on the Gardner scale, max 8.0 (ISO 4630).
- Turbidity: cold‑related turbidity allowed provided it can be removed by heating above 40 °C (ISO 15715).
- Terms and definitions: aligned with ISO 4618 (paints and varnishes terminology).
- Test report content: identification, reference to ISO 276:2019, test results and compliance statement, deviations, agreements, anomalies and test dates.
Practical applications and users
- Paint and varnish manufacturers: specify linseed stand oils by grade for consistent rheology, drying and film properties.
- Raw material suppliers and traders: certify product conformity and declare test results for procurement.
- Quality control and testing laboratories: perform prescribed tests (viscosity, acid and saponification values, colour, turbidity) and produce standardized test reports.
- Specifiers and procurement teams: incorporate EN ISO 276 requirements into technical specifications, contracts and acceptance criteria.
- Formulators and R&D: use standardized data to select appropriate stand oil grades for formulations, scale‑up and troubleshooting (e.g., addressing cold turbidity by controlled heating).
