Overview
EN 3745-405:2012 - Aerospace series: Fibres and cables, optical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 405: Low/High temperature bend test - specifies a laboratory method to determine the attenuation variation of optical fibres and cables when mechanically bent under load at the maximum and minimum operating temperatures. The procedure defines specimen preparation, required apparatus, conditioning, mandrel-winding steps and acceptance criteria to assess cable performance under extreme temperature bending conditions.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Measures change in optical attenuation caused by bending under load at low and high operating temperatures.
- Specimen preparation: Stabilize specimens at standard conditions for 24 h (per EN 3745-100). Details to be specified include number and length of specimens, upper/lower test temperatures, mandrel diameter and number of wraps, permissible attenuation variation, applied loads and wavelengths to measure.
- Apparatus: Requires a Light Launch System (LLS) and Light Detection System (LDS) (EN 2591-100), a rotating mandrel test fixture with weights, and an environmental chamber capable of maintaining test temperatures to ±2 °C.
- Test method (high-level):
- Connect specimen to LLS/LDS and record initial attenuation at specified wavelengths.
- Condition at low temperature for 4 hours, measure attenuation, then wind two turns on the mandrel at a steady rate (2 turns/min) and measure while wrapped.
- Unwind, re-measure and allow specimen to return to room temperature.
- Repeat conditioning and measurements at the high temperature.
- Acceptance: The difference in attenuation before and after mandrel winding at both temperatures shall be less than the limit specified in the applicable product standard. Perform visual inspection per EN 3745-201.
Applications
- Qualification and environmental validation of aerospace optical fibres and cables for aircraft systems (avionics, flight control, sensors, data buses).
- Production and acceptance testing by manufacturers to demonstrate compliance with aerospace performance requirements.
- Design verification during R&D to optimize cable construction for low/high temperature bend resilience.
- Failure analysis and troubleshooting where temperature-dependent bend loss is suspected.
Who uses this standard
- Aerospace cable and fibre manufacturers
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies
- Avionics and aircraft systems engineers
- Quality assurance and procurement teams specifying acceptance criteria
