Overview
EN 14202:2004 (CEN) specifies requirements and test methods for electric tubular and square drives without driven part used in power-operated blinds and shutters. It complements electrical safety standards EN 60335-1 and EN 60335-2-97 and is part of the blinds/shutters standards family referenced by EN 12216, EN 13120, EN 13561 and EN 13659. EN 14202 focuses on mechanical endurance, performance and functionality of the drive unit itself - it does not apply to drives that are supplied only as built‑in units with their driven part.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: clarifies tubular vs square motorization and what constitutes a drive “without driven part”.
- Endurance test: describes a rigid test rig (roller tube or profile with drums) and a travelling distance of 2 m.
- Test cycles: tubular motorization - 7 000 cycles; square motorization - 10 000 cycles.
- Test load calculation: load P is calculated from the nominal torque M and drum diameters (De and Dc). For tubular drives De = 0.080 m when roller tube diameter Dt ≥ 0.040 m (alternative formula when Dt < 0.040 m); square drives use an inscribed-circle-based De.
- Performance requirements after endurance:
- Speed stability: variation of run time under load must be ≤ 20% (measured T1 vs T2).
- Limit stop accuracy (drift): classes defined for allowable angle drift - tubular (Class 1: +15°; Class 2: +5°), square (Class 1: +10°; Class 2: +3°).
- Brake characteristics:
- Dynamic (tilt function for external venetian blinds): angular displacement on stop shall not exceed 20°.
- Static: with 1.15 × P stopped mid-travel, displacement after 12 h ≤ 5 mm.
- No visible grease or oil leakage.
- Test report: mandatory details (lab, product ID, test conditions, results per clause 5).
Applications and who uses it
- Manufacturers of tubular and square drives - for design validation, type testing and technical documentation.
- Test laboratories - to perform standardized endurance and performance testing and produce compliance reports.
- Product certifiers and conformity assessors - to verify mechanical performance in addition to electrical safety.
- Specifiers, architects and procurement teams - to reference in technical specifications and tender documents for building blinds, shutters and external venetian systems.
- Installers and OEMs integrating drives into blind/shutter systems - to ensure compatibility and declared performance.
