Resilient floor coverings - Determination of conventional pattern depth

This European Standard specifies three methods for determining conventional pattern depth by change in appearance of the characteristics of the pattern of resilient floor coverings which are classified as follows: Group 1: Patterns where the different bands (in colour and/or relief) are distributed in a uniform manner, wher the ration of pattern to background in small areas of 0,01 m2 to 0,02 m2 in not more than 1:4; Group 2: Patterns where this ration varies considerably where some areas of 0,01 m2 to 0,02 m2 may contain only one part of the pattern.

Overview

EN 663:1994 is a CEN (European) standard that defines how to measure the conventional pattern depth of resilient floor coverings. The standard specifies three methods for determining pattern depth based on changes in the appearance of the flooring pattern. It is used to classify and quantify the visual relief and colour-pattern depth of non-textile resilient floor coverings for quality control, specification and comparative testing.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Measurement of conventional pattern depth for resilient (non-textile) floor coverings.
  • Three measurement methods: The standard prescribes three distinct methods to assess pattern depth by observing change in appearance. (EN 663:1994 gives procedural detail in the full text.)
  • Pattern classification: Flooring patterns are classified into two groups:
    • Group 1: Patterns with uniformly distributed bands (colour and/or relief). The pattern-to-background ratio in small areas of 0.01 m² to 0.02 m² is not more than 1:4.
    • Group 2: Patterns with highly variable distribution; some small areas (0.01 m² to 0.02 m²) may contain only a single part of the pattern.
  • Applicable materials: Non‑textile resilient floor coverings (ICS 97.150).
  • Standard identification: CEN European Standard EN 663:1994 (adopted nationally in some countries, e.g., SIST EN 663:1999 in Slovenia).

Practical applications

Who uses EN 663:1994 and why:

  • Manufacturers - for product development, in-house QC and to ensure consistent pattern reproduction across production batches.
  • Independent test laboratories - to perform standardized, repeatable measurements of pattern depth for certification and compliance testing.
  • Specifiers, architects and interior designers - to compare visual texture and relief between products when selecting coverings for aesthetic or performance reasons.
  • Contractors and procurement teams - to verify supplied materials match contract or tender specifications.
  • Regulatory bodies and conformity assessment organizations - for harmonized assessment when pattern appearance is part of performance criteria.

Related standards

  • Other CEN standards on resilient floor coverings cover properties such as wear resistance, slip resistance and dimensional tolerances. When specifying or testing flooring, combine EN 663:1994 with relevant performance standards to get a complete assessment.
