Resilient floor coverings - Polyvinyl chloride floor coverings with particle based enhanced slip resistance - Specification
This European Standard specifies the characteristics of floor coverings with sustainable enhanced slip resistant characteristics under specified conditions based on polyvinyl chloride and modifications thereof, supplied in either tile or roll form.
To encourage the consumer to make an informed choice, this European Standard includes a classification system (see EN ISO 10874) based on intensity of use, which shows where resilient floor coverings should give satisfactory service.
In addition, this European Standard details the requirements for the information to be included on the packaging labels.
The slip measurements are made in a laboratory on ex-factory floor covering surfaces only. The method described is suitable for testing on wet surfaces.

Overview
EN 13845:2017 - Resilient floor coverings - Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) floor coverings with particle‑based enhanced slip resistance - Specification - is a European Standard from CEN that defines performance, testing and marking requirements for PVC floor coverings (tiles or rolls) designed to provide sustainable enhanced slip resistance in wet conditions. The standard addresses ex‑factory surfaces only and is suitable for testing slip resistance on wet surfaces.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and product type
- Applies to PVC and modified PVC floor coverings with particle‑based enhanced slip resistance (identifiable aggregates or particles embedded in the wear surface).
- Covers both roll and tile formats.
- Slip resistance
- Slip measurements are laboratory tests on ex‑factory surfaces; methods include the ramp (ramp test) and the pendulum friction test (see Annex C and CEN/TS 16165:2016).
- Tests can be performed for barefoot or footwear use.
- Performance classification
- Uses the EN ISO 10874 classification scheme (levels of use: domestic, commercial, industrial) to help consumers and specifiers match products to intensity of use.
- Tableed wear‑resistance cycles and minimum thicknesses are specified for different classes (examples in the standard: 20 000 to 50 000 Frick‑Taber cycles for various classes).
- Technical properties & tests
- Dimensional stability, thickness (EN ISO 24346), indentation (EN ISO 24343‑1), flexibility (EN ISO 24344), colour fastness (EN ISO 105‑B02), seam strength (EN 684), castor chair resistance (EN 425) and wear resistance (EN 660‑2 Frick‑Taber) are referenced.
- Marking and labelling
- Packaging must state the standard number/date, manufacturer, product name, colour/batch, classification symbols, dimensions, installation notes (e.g., rolls to be fully bonded), and slip resistance classification.
Applications and practical value
- Use EN 13845:2017 to specify and verify PVC safety flooring for wet‑loaded areas such as kitchens, washrooms, changing rooms, pool surrounds and other public/industrial wet zones.
- Enables informed material selection by comparing slip resistance, wear life, and classification against expected traffic and use conditions.
- Ensures consistent testing and labelling so building owners, architects, installers and procurement teams can assess suitability for barefoot vs footwear zones.
Who should use this standard
- Flooring manufacturers and product developers (for design and compliance)
- Test laboratories (for conducting ramp/pendulum and wear tests)
- Architects, specifiers and safety managers (for product selection)
- Facility managers and procurement teams (for procurement and asset management)
- Installers (for installation requirements noted on labels)
