a) Nenndicken, 4 mm
b) Nennbreiten, w >or= 600 mm.
Kontinuirno vroče valjane nerjavne pločevine - Mejni odstopki mer in tolerance oblik (ISO 18286:2008)
a) 4 mm < nazivna debelina, d < 250 mm;

Overview
EN ISO 18286:2010 (identical to ISO 18286:2008) is a CEN/ISO standard that specifies tolerances on dimensions and shape for hot‑rolled stainless steel plates (quarto plates) produced on a reversing mill. It covers plates with nominal thicknesses from 4 mm to 250 mm and nominal widths ≥ 600 mm. Plates narrower than 600 mm that are cut or slit from wider plates require tolerance agreement between manufacturer and purchaser. The standard excludes round plates, custom-made plates, checker/bulb flooring plates, wide flats, and continuous‑process (coiled) plates.
Keywords: EN ISO 18286, hot-rolled stainless steel plates, tolerances on dimensions and shape, quarto plates, ISO 18286:2008.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Thickness tolerances: Defined by nominal thickness and plate width; minimum thickness requirements apply across the entire plate unless otherwise agreed.
- Width and length tolerances: Three classes are provided:
- Class A (trimmed edges - standard tolerances)
- Class B (flame‑cut plate)
- Class C (abrasive‑cut plate) Purchaser must specify the class; in absence of instruction, Class A is default.
- Edge condition: Plates may be supplied with trimmed edges or mill edges (NK); mill‑edge tolerances must be agreed at order.
- Shape tolerances:
- Flatness: Two flatness classes - Class N (normal) and Class S (special). Purchaser must state which applies; manufacturer may deliver either if unspecified.
- Edge camber and out‑of‑squareness: Limits are defined (e.g., camber and squareness percentage limits relative to nominal dimensions or by the ability to inscribe the ordered rectangle for mill edges).
- Excess mass and measurement methods: The standard includes rules for excess mass limits and standardized measurement procedures for thickness, width, length, camber, squareness and flatness.
- Ordering and designation: Purchaser must supply product description, nominal dimensions, edge code (NK if required), tolerance classes and steel grade (reference to ISO 16143‑1), plus any options listed in Clause 10.
Practical applications and users
Who uses EN ISO 18286:
- Steel mill production planners and quality control teams (to set and verify plate tolerances).
- Procurement and specification writers (to define acceptance criteria in purchase orders).
- Fabricators, plate processors and plate‑working shops (for cutting, trimming and nesting).
- Inspectors and QA engineers (for dimensional inspection and conformity assessment).
- Designers and structural engineers (to account for manufacturing tolerances in assemblies).
Typical uses:
- Specifying acceptance criteria for structural and industrial stainless steel plates.
- Defining tolerances for material delivered to fabrication, shipbuilding, oil & gas, machinery and architectural projects.
- Enabling clear commercial agreements between purchaser and manufacturer on edge condition, tolerances and flatness.
Related standards
- ISO 9444 (continuous‑process/coiled plate tolerances) - for coiled/continuous‑process plates.
- ISO/TS 15510 (stainless steels - chemical composition).
- ISO 16143‑1 (stainless steels for general purposes - flat products) - for steel grade designation.
For correct application, purchasers should explicitly state tolerance classes, edge condition (NK if mill edge required), flatness class and excess mass limits in the enquiry and order.

ISO 18286:2008(E) iv © ISO 2008 – All rights reserved Foreword ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization. International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2. The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote. Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. ISO 18286 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 17, Steel, Subcommittee SC 4, Heat treatable and alloy steels. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 18286:2004), of which it constitutes a minor revision.

The article discusses the standard EN ISO 18286:2010, which specifies tolerances for hot-rolled stainless steel plates. These plates are made on a reversing mill and have a nominal thickness ranging from 4 mm to 250 mm, and a nominal width of 600 mm or greater. If the width is less than 600 mm, the tolerances should be agreed upon between the manufacturer and purchaser. The standard does not apply to round plates, custom-made plates, checker plates or bulb plates for flooring or wide flats, or continuous-process plates.
