Overview
EN 1744-7:2012 (CEN) specifies the reference test method for determining Loss on Ignition (LOI) of aggregates produced from Municipal Incinerator Bottom Ash (MIBA Aggregate). The standard defines the laboratory procedure, required apparatus, sampling and specimen preparation, test conditions and reporting rules. The method is the reference method for type testing and dispute resolution; alternative methods may be used for factory production control only if they are shown to have an appropriate relationship with the reference method.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: LOI determination for MIBA Aggregates produced by processing municipal incinerator bottom ash.
- Principle: Measure unburned residues by mass loss after ignition in an oxidizing atmosphere; LOI expressed as percentage of the dry mass of the initial sample after heating for 4 h at (480 ± 25) °C.
- Sampling & specimen prep: Laboratory sampling per EN 932-1; sample reduction per EN 932-2. Produce a ~400 g sub-sample passing a 4 mm sieve, then prepare two test specimens (50–100 g each).
- Apparatus: Well‑ventilated drying oven (110 ± 5 °C), electric muffle furnace (480 ± 25 °C), heat‑resistant containers and grid (porcelain/quartz/platinum recommended), crushers, balances (readabilities 1 g and 0.01 g), desiccator and test sieve.
- Procedure highlights: Dry to constant mass, pre‑ignite containers, weigh specimen+container before and after ignition, ignite for at least 240 minutes, cool in desiccator, calculate LOI corrected for container mass.
- Calculation & precision: LOI calculated from mass loss corrected for container. Mean of two results reported to 0.1 %. Precision checks: if mean LOI ≤ 3.0 % the two results must differ by ≤ 0.6 %; if > 3.0 % difference must be ≤ 1.0 %. If not met, repeat with two additional specimens and report mean of four.
- Storage note: LOI of MIBA Aggregates may change during storage because of hydration/weathering.
Applications and users
- Practical uses:
- Quality control and acceptance testing of MIBA aggregates for construction use.
- Type testing and dispute resolution where a standardized reference method is required.
- Material characterisation to quantify unburned carbon and organic residues in ash‑derived aggregates.
- Supporting decisions on suitability of MIBA Aggregates for concrete, road base, fill and other civil engineering applications.
- Typical users:
- Aggregate and MIBA processors, waste‑to‑resource facilities
- Independent testing laboratories and notified bodies
- Construction materials specifiers, engineers and contractors
- Regulators and procurement authorities monitoring reclaimed or recycled materials
