Overview
EN 1014-2:2010 (CEN) is the European standard that specifies a validated procedure for obtaining a representative sample of creosote from creosoted timber for subsequent chemical analysis. Part 2 of the EN 1014 series, it focuses on sampling creosoted wood, extraction of creosote and handling of the extract to support quality control, regulatory testing and laboratory determination.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and objective: Obtain representative creosote samples from a defined batch or, if batch ID is unavailable, from a single piece of creosoted timber. Analysis should ideally follow sampling promptly.
- Sampling method: Remove sufficient timber from impregnated zones using procedures referenced in EN 351-2. Borings (cut to include only impregnated zone) are the preferred sampling technique.
- Sample preparation: Convert removed impregnated wood to particles appropriate for Soxhlet extraction. If stored before extraction, place samples in a glass phial with screw top and keep at ≤ 10 °C.
- Reagent: Use analytical-grade toluene (evaporation residue < 0.001 % m/m).
- Apparatus: Typical laboratory equipment plus a 250 ml round-bottom flask, heating mantle, 100 ml Soxhlet extractor, extraction thimble, Dean and Stark receiver, reflux condenser and stainless-steel wire gauze.
- Extraction procedure:
- Use ~200 ml toluene in the flask; assemble Soxhlet apparatus.
- Reflux at a rate ≥ one drop/second from the condenser tip.
- Continue reflux for a minimum of 3 hours, extending up to 6 hours until solvent in the Soxhlet is colourless.
- Distil off approximately 175 ml of toluene, evaporate residue on a water bath to obtain the creosote extract.
- Note: treated timber typically contains ~10% by mass creosote (so ~20 g wood yields ~2 g creosote).
- Reporting: A sampling report must document reference to EN 1014-2, sample ID, date, batch size, sampling procedure (EN 351-2 reference), observations and any deviations.
Applications and users
- Quality control and acceptance testing by wood preservative manufacturers and treated timber producers.
- Independent testing laboratories performing chemical analysis (benzo(a)pyrene, phenols, etc.).
- Inspectors, certification bodies, environmental and forensic labs assessing creosote content for compliance, safety and environmental monitoring.
- Useful in construction, railway, marine and utility sectors where creosoted timber is applied.
