Overview

prEN 933-11 is a CEN test method for the geometrical examination and classification of coarse recycled aggregate. The standard specifies a hands-on procedure to identify and quantify the constituent materials present in recycled coarse aggregate - for example bituminous materials, masonry, concrete, lightweight particles, unbound aggregate and “other” materials - and to express each constituent as a percentage of the test portion mass. prEN 933-11 supports quality control, reuse decisions and material characterisation for construction applications.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Identifies and estimates relative proportions of constituent materials in coarse recycled aggregates. Includes precaution about handling dangerous substances found during examination.
  • Sample preparation: Bulk sample reduction per EN 932-2 to produce a laboratory test portion. Guidance given to target a test portion containing at least 500 particles (Table guidance for mass vs. maximum particle size).
  • Drying & mass control: Dry to constant mass - normally at (110 ± 5) °C; temperature-sensitive materials may be dried at (40 ± 5) °C. Record dry mass (M0) and test portion mass (M1).
  • Sieving: Use 63 mm and 8 mm sieves (EN 933-2) to remove oversize (>63 mm) and undersize (<8 mm) particles before sorting.
  • Sorting & classes: Hand-sort test portion into six classes: A Bituminous, B Masonry, C Concrete, L Lightweight (<1.0 Mg/m3), U Unbound aggregate, X Other. Optional masonry and “other” subclasses provide more detail (e.g., clay masonry, autoclaved aerated concrete, wood, plastics, gypsum).
  • Weighing & calculations: Determine mass of each class, calculate percent P = M(class)/M1 × 100. Rounding rules: Class X and its subclasses to one decimal place; other classes to whole numbers.
  • Validation: If summed masses differ from M1 by more than 1%, repeat the test.
  • Apparatus: Includes calibrated sieves, ventilated oven, balance (readable to 0.1 %), trays, brushes; sieving machine optional.
  • Optional tests: Density characteristics per EN 1097-6 Annex C can be applied to sorted classes.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it: Aggregate testing laboratories, recycled-aggregate producers, demolition and recycling facilities, concrete/asphalt producers, materials engineers, specifiers and regulators.
  • Practical uses:
    • Quality control and certification of recycled coarse aggregates.
    • Determining acceptability and end-use (e.g., reuse in concrete, unbound layers, asphalt).
    • Supporting specification compliance, reporting, and environmental/resource management.
    • Feeding further tests (density, mechanical and chemical tests) by providing class-separated samples.
