Geosynthetics - Screening test method for determining chemical resistance for landfill applications

This European Standard describes a test method to determine the chemical resistance of geosynthetics to liquid municipal, agricultural and industrial wastes, using a laboratory immersion procedure.
The procedure includes three chemical compounds chosen to initiate known types of chemical degradation, and a synthetic leachate representative of a landfill containing domestic waste.  The procedure can also be applied using a site-specific leachate.  These options are denoted by methods A to E:
- method A: hydrolysis under acidic conditions;
- method B: hydrolysis under basic conditions;
- method C: solvation/swelling;
- method D: synthetic leachate;
- method E: any site-specific leachate;
The method of evaluation (see clause 9) differs according to whether the material is a geotextile, a polymeric or bituminous geosynthetic barrier, or a geosynthetic clay barrier. In the case of geosynthetic clay barriers only the polymeric component will be tested.

-   Verfahren A: Hydrolyse unter sauren Bedingungen;
-   Verfahren B: Hydrolyse unter basischen Bedingungen;
-   Verfahren C: Lösungsvorgänge/Quellen;
-   Verfahren D: künstliches Deponiesickerwasser;

Overview

EN 14414:2004 (CEN) specifies a laboratory screening test method to determine the chemical resistance of geosynthetics for landfill applications. The procedure assesses how geotextiles, polymeric or bituminous geosynthetic barriers, and geosynthetic clay barriers (GCLs - testing only the polymeric component) react to contact with liquid municipal, agricultural and industrial wastes. The test uses controlled immersion in selected chemical agents or leachates to simulate common degradation mechanisms encountered in landfills.

Key Topics

  • Test purpose: Screening for chemical degradation of geosynthetics used in landfill liners, caps and containment systems.
  • Immersion approach: Laboratory immersion in specific chemical compounds or leachates representative of landfill conditions.
  • Five test options (methods A–E):
    • Method A: Hydrolysis under acidic conditions
    • Method B: Hydrolysis under basic (alkaline) conditions
    • Method C: Solvation/swelling (solvent-type effect)
    • Method D: Synthetic leachate representative of domestic waste landfills
    • Method E: Any site-specific leachate (user-provided)
  • Evaluation differences: Clause 9 defines evaluation procedures that vary by material type - geotextiles, polymeric or bituminous barriers, and geosynthetic clay barriers (only polymeric components evaluated for GCLs).
  • Scope limits: This is a screening test method - intended to identify potential chemical sensitivity rather than provide exhaustive in-field performance predictions.

Applications

EN 14414:2004 is practical for professionals and organizations involved in landfill design, materials selection, testing and regulation:

  • Geotechnical and landfill engineers - to screen candidate geosynthetics for chemical compatibility with expected leachates.
  • Manufacturers and product developers - for comparative product assessment and early-stage quality control.
  • Testing laboratories - to perform standardized immersion tests for specifications and certification.
  • Regulators and owners/operators - to inform procurement specifications, compliance checks and risk assessments.
  • Consultants - to recommend appropriate liner systems or site-specific testing (method E) based on waste streams.

Practical uses include material selection for base liners, cap systems, containment barriers, performance-based specifications, and preliminary compatibility assessments with municipal, industrial or agricultural waste leachates.

Related Standards (if applicable)

  • EN 14414 complements other European standards for geosynthetics (geotextiles, geomembranes, GCLs) and laboratory test methods addressing physical, mechanical and hydraulic properties. Use EN 14414 together with product-specific standards and site-specific chemical characterization protocols for comprehensive design and specification.
