(Amendment)Chimneys - Components - Concrete flue blocks
Chimneys - Components - Concrete flue blocks
This European Standard specifies the materials, dimensional and performance requirements for precast concrete flue blocks as defined in Clause 3 for use in chimneys. The flue blocks may be of single wall or multi wall construction. The standard does not apply to flue blocks with back ventilation. This standard does not cover products designated wet (W) in conjunction with corrosion class 3. The standard also specifies a type of flue block to dimensionally co-ordinate with masonry unit coursing height, referred to as a type B (Bonding block). This European Standard also applies to storey-height and flue blocks reinforced for handling. NOTE Any reference to the term flue blocks implies both flue blocks and their fittings, except where otherwise indicated.

Overview
EN 1858:2008/FprA1 is a CEN European standard that defines requirements for precast concrete flue blocks used in chimneys. The standard specifies acceptable materials, dimensional and performance criteria for both single-wall and multi-wall concrete flue blocks, including storey-height units and blocks reinforced for handling. It also defines a type B (Bonding block) that is dimensioned to co-ordinate with masonry unit coursing height. The amendment A1 makes minor editorial corrections to the scope wording and a normative reference.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Materials: Requirements for the concrete and any associated components to ensure durability and structural suitability for chimney use.
- Dimensional requirements: Definitions of block geometry, tolerances and a dedicated Bonding block (type B) for masonry coursing coordination.
- Performance requirements: Tests and criteria to demonstrate the blocks meet functional demands for flues (strength, handling, dimensional stability).
- Construction types: Coverage of single-wall and multi-wall flue blocks; includes storey-height blocks and blocks reinforced for handling.
- Exclusions and limitations:
- Not applicable to flue blocks with back ventilation.
- Does not cover products designated wet (W) when used with corrosion class 3.
- Fittings: References to flue block fittings are included where applicable - “flue blocks” implies the block and its fittings unless stated otherwise.
- Normative references: Amendment corrects the citation of EN ISO 7500-1 to (ISO 7500-1:2004).
Applications
- Specification and quality control of precast concrete flue blocks for residential, commercial and industrial chimneys.
- Design coordination where chimneys interface with masonry walls (use of Bonding blocks to match coursing height).
- Selection of blocks for storey-height installations and for units that require reinforcement for handling during installation.
- Basis for testing, certification and compliance documentation for manufacturers and suppliers.
Who should use this standard
- Manufacturers of precast concrete flue blocks and chimney components
- Chimney and masonry designers and system engineers
- Construction contractors and installation teams specifying chimney components
- Product testing laboratories, certification bodies and regulatory authorities
- Procurement and specification writers sourcing compliant flue blocks
