Overview
EN 13763-9:2025 - published by CEN - defines a standardized test method for verifying the resistance to bending of detonators used in civil explosives. The standard applies to electric detonators, non‑electric detonators, plain and semi‑finished detonators, and electronic detonators. It specifies sample preparation, required apparatus, two bending test configurations (clamped at the base and clamped at the top), observation criteria and follow‑up functional initiation. This part of the EN 13763 series supports safe design, manufacture and conformity assessment of detonators for civil uses.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and exclusions: Applies to detonators for civil uses; explicitly excludes detonating cord relays, surface connectors, leading wires, shock tubes, coupling accessories and electronic initiation systems.
- Sample size and marking: Typical sample set is 26 test pieces per detonator model. For many types, 13 pieces are tested clamped at the base and 13 clamped at the top; plain and semi‑finished detonators are tested clamped at the base. Marking locations depend on presence of delay elements.
- Apparatus:
- Steel block with a hole (length ≥ 30 mm; hole diameter not more than 0.1 mm larger than detonator diameter; edge radius (2 ± 0.1) mm).
- Weight of (50 ± 0.1) N.
- Steel ring and wire, movable support table, marking tool.
- Means of initiation as specified in EN 13763‑1:2025.
- Test procedure:
- Insert test piece into the steel block to the marked plane, attach weight via ring and wire to protruding end.
- Maintain the bending load for at least 5 seconds and observe whether detonation, cracking or shell breakage occurs.
- If damage or initiation occurs, record and end the test for that piece.
- After bending, perform a functional initiation test to verify whether the detonator still detonates.
- Environmental conditions: Tests are carried out within the temperature range of use specified in EN 13763‑1:2025.
- Reporting and results: Clause structure covers expression of results and the information required in the test report; Annex ZA links the standard to Directive 2014/28/EU.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: detonator manufacturers, quality assurance teams, independent testing laboratories, conformity assessment bodies, regulatory authorities, and procurement/specification engineers in mining, quarrying, construction and civil blasting.
- Why it’s useful:
- Ensures detonator mechanical robustness under borehole loading and handling.
- Reduces risk of inadvertent initiation or misfire due to bending stresses.
- Provides reproducible, auditable test procedures for product certification and market compliance.

4 Principle
During use, detonators can be subjected to bending during the loading of boreholes. Bending of a
detonator could cause inadvertent initiation or misfire.
For the verification of the resistance to bending, a test piece is subjected to a bending force by clamping
one end of it and attaching a weight at the other end. Two types of tests are performed, one where the
test piece is clamped at the base and another one where the test piece is clamped at the top. It
