Overview
EN 13763-2:2025 - published by CEN - defines a standardized test method to verify the thermal stability of detonators, surface connectors, detonating cord relays and shock tubes used in civil explosives applications. The standard addresses how to expose test samples to elevated temperatures representative of worst-case storage, transport or use conditions and how to record and report reactions. Note: electronic initiation systems are excluded from this part.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to electric, non‑electric and electronic detonators, plain and semi‑finished detonators, surface connectors, detonating cord relays and shock tubes.
- Test sample size: Select 25 test pieces for each sample set (shock tube pieces of 1,00 ± 0,05 m).
- Conditioning: Use a conditioning chamber able to maintain required test temperatures, racks resistant to the test temperature, and a time‑measuring device.
- Temperature selection: Expose samples for 48 h (±1 h) at the highest of:
- Maximum temperature of use (from EN 13763-1:2025) + (25 ± 2) °C,
- Maximum storage temperature (from EN 13763-1:2025) + (25 ± 2) °C,
- (75 ± 2) °C.
(Special provisions for detonators with maximum use temperature >100 °C are included.)
- Sample placement: For detonators/surface connectors place 12 pieces base‑up and 13 base‑down on the rack; for shock tubes and cord relays place all pieces together.
- Observation criteria: Monitor for detonation, deflagration, ejection of sealing plugs, splitting, deformation or other evidence of reaction. If any piece reacts during the test, testing is terminated.
- Result expression: Test outcome is “pass” if no reaction is observed on any test piece; otherwise “fail”.
- Test report requirements: Include reference to EN 13763-2:2025, identification of the explosive, conditioning temperature, and the pass/fail result (with details if fail).
Applications and users
EN 13763-2:2025 is intended for practical use by:
- Manufacturers of detonators, detonating cord relays, shock tubes and surface connectors to verify product stability;
- Independent testing laboratories performing conformity and type testing;
- Quality and safety managers in mining, quarrying, civil engineering and demolition sectors for procurement and storage risk assessments;
- Regulatory bodies and notified authorities assessing compliance with EU Directive 2014/28/EU (informative Annex ZA).
