Overview
EN 2591-315:2015 - Aerospace series - Elements of electrical and optical connection - Test methods - Part 315: Fluid resistance - is a CEN standard that specifies a reproducible method for determining the resistance of electrical and optical connectors (and cable accessories) to fluids. It is intended to be used together with EN 2591-100 (general test methods) and EN 3909 (test fluids).
This standard defines the fluids to be used, specimen preparation, a three‑phase test cycle (immersion, drainage/storage, and heat exposure), default timings and temperatures, cycle count, and final measurement requirements.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Fluid resistance test method for connectors and cable accessories. Used in conjunction with EN 2591-100 and EN 3909.
- Test fluids: Selection from fluid groups defined in EN 3909 (fuels, hydraulic fluids, oils, cleaning fluids, de-icing fluids, fire extinguishant, cooling fluids). One fluid per specimen from each required group.
- Specimen preparation:
- Visual inspection, clean, dry, “ready for use” condition.
- Unwired cavities fitted with contacts and sealing plugs; 20% of cavities with sealing plugs (minimum 1 plug for connectors with <5 cavities).
- Wired contacts fitted with sufficient cable to avoid undue strain during immersion.
- Test cycle (three phases):
- First phase - immersion (specimens unmated unless specified); bring to temperature T1 and immerse for (15 + 5) minutes. Grease‑type fluids applied as a fine film and baked similarly if specified.
- Second phase - drain/store at ambient for (7 ± 0.5) hours; allow trapped fluid to drain (do not wipe dry).
- Third phase - specimens mated and heated in a circulated oven at temperature T2 for (16 ± 0.5) hours. If T2 is unspecified, default is (65 ± 2) °C.
- Number of cycles: Specified by Product Standard/Technical Specification. If not specified, repeat four additional cycles (five cycles total).
- Safety and limits: Observe flash points of test fluids; omit gases at test temperature unless instructed; take appropriate safety measures when testing above flash points.
- Final measurements: Performed at room temperature without cleaning. Include visual exam (EN 2591-101), insulation resistance (EN 2591-206) for non‑conducting fluids, mating/unmating force (EN 2591-408), and contact retention (EN 2591-409) as applicable.
Applications and users
- Connector and cable accessory manufacturers - qualification and product validation.
- Aerospace test laboratories - routine environmental and qualification testing.
- Design and quality engineers - assessing material and sealing robustness against fuels, hydraulic fluids, oils, de-icers and other contaminants.
- Procurement and certification bodies - verifying compliance with aerospace test requirements.
- MRO and maintenance planners - understanding connector limits and contamination risks.
