SCOPE
1.1 This guide covers sampling for prebaked carbon anodes used in the production of aluminum, and details procedures for taking test samples from anode blocks. It covers equipment and procedures for obtaining samples from anode blocks in a manner that does not destroy the block or prevent its subsequent use as originally intended. However, the user must determine the subsequent use of the sampled anode blocks. Preferred locations for taking samples from single units of anodes are covered in this guide.
1.1.1 Information for sampling of shaped refractory products, in general, is given in ISO 5022. This standard details the statistical basis for sampling plans for acceptance testing of a consignment or lot. Anodes used in the production of aluminum have specific requirements for sampling and while the statistical basis for sampling given in ISO 5022 applies, further or modified requirements may also apply.
1.1.2 Information for sampling of anodes for Al-metal production is given in ISO 8007-2. This standard details the statistical basis for sampling plans for acceptance testing of a consignment or lot.
1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
Note 1: The following ASTM standards are noted as sources of useful information: Test Methods D5502, D6120, D6744, and D6745.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM D6353-23: Standard Guide for Sampling Plan and Core Sampling for Prebaked Anodes Used in Aluminum Production provides a comprehensive guideline for obtaining core samples from prebaked carbon anodes-critical components in aluminum manufacturing. This guide focuses on non-destructive sampling methods to collect test specimens without compromising the integrity or future usability of the anode block. The procedures outlined are designed for both producers and users of carbon anodes and ensure reliable test results for comparative physical property analysis, while maintaining structural strength and safety.
Key Topics
- Core Sampling Techniques: The standard outlines how to extract test specimens from prebaked anodes using core drills without affecting the block's performance or causing premature failure.
- Sample Location Guidance: Recommended sampling positions for different anode block sizes and designs are included to ensure representative results while preserving block integrity.
- Sample Dimensions: Instructions are provided for determining the appropriate sample size based on reference test methods, with considerations for the minimum diameter and length.
- Sampling Report Requirements: The guide specifies the essential data that must be included in a sampling report, such as batch identification, sampling location, method details, and any deviations from standard procedures.
- Statistical Basis: It references ISO 5022 and ISO 8007-2 for statistical approaches to sampling plans and acceptance testing of consignments or lots.
Applications
The practical application of ASTM D6353-23 is centered on the aluminum production industry, specifically:
- Quality Control: Enables aluminum smelters and anode manufacturers to monitor the physical properties of carbon anodes through standardized, non-destructive sampling. This is crucial for maintaining consistent product quality.
- Process Optimization: Test specimens obtained via core sampling allow producers to evaluate changes in raw materials, manufacturing techniques, or handling that may affect anode performance.
- Comparative Analysis: Both producers and end-users can perform property comparisons using reference ASTM testing methods. This fosters better supplier-customer transparency and adherence to contractual requirements.
- Risk Minimization: The guide ensures that sampling operations do not weaken the anode or cause unnecessary risk of failure during use in electrolytic cells.
- Documentation and Traceability: By requiring detailed sampling reports, the guide supports traceability and accountability throughout the supply chain.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive sampling and testing strategy in the production of aluminum, ASTM D6353-23 should be used alongside several related standards:
- ISO 5022: Shaped refractory products - Sampling and acceptance testing, for guidance on broader sampling strategies and statistical planning.
- ISO 8007-2: Carbonaceous materials used in aluminum production - Sampling plans for prebaked anodes.
- ASTM D5502: Test Method for Apparent Density of Anode and Cathode Carbon.
- ASTM D6120: Test Method for Electrical Resistivity of Anode and Cathode Carbon.
- ASTM D6744: Test Method for Thermal Conductivity of Anode Carbons.
- ASTM D6745: Test Method for Linear Thermal Expansion of Electrode Carbons.
- ASTM D4175: Terminology Relating to Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels, and Lubricants, for standardized vocabulary.
Summary
ASTM D6353-23 standardizes the process of core sampling for prebaked carbon anodes in the aluminum industry, ensuring quality, consistency, and safety without damaging valuable anode blocks. Its structured approach to non-destructive testing, documentation, and traceability is vital for manufacturers and users aiming for high-performance, reliable aluminum production. For best practice, this guide should be used in conjunction with referenced ASTM and ISO standards for comprehensive quality assurance.
