Standard Specification for Common Laboratory Glass Funnels

ABSTRACT
This specification covers common laboratory or filter funnels, and filling or powder funnels for general laboratory use. The laboratory glass funnels shall be classified into four types which are divided into classes. Type 1 is common laboratory funnel with smooth inner surface which is divided into three classes: Class A with short stem, Class B with long stem, and Class C without stem. Type 2 is laboratory funnel with fluted inner wall. The flutes are small grooves or depressions running upward from the bottom zone of the bowl. This type is divided into Class A and Class B. Type 3 is laboratory funnel with ribbed inner wall. The ribs are small raised protuberances from funnel rim toward the stem. Class A and Class B funnels belong to this type. Type 4 is the last type which is filling or powder funnels. This type has short, wide diameter stem.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers common laboratory or filter funnels, and filling or powder funnels for general laboratory use.
1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

Overview

ASTM E1095-99(2022), titled Standard Specification for Common Laboratory Glass Funnels, is a globally recognized ASTM standard addressing the requirements for glass funnels used in laboratories. This specification ensures quality and performance for a variety of laboratory glass funnels, including both filter funnels and filling or powder funnels. The standard supports the consistent manufacturing, classification, and usage of laboratory glassware, contributing to safety and efficiency in laboratory environments.

The scope of ASTM E1095-99(2022) covers general laboratory glass funnels, detailing their material, dimensional, and design requirements, and aligns with international standardization principles as endorsed by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Key Topics

  • Types and Classes of Funnels
ASTM E1095-99(2022) classifies laboratory glass funnels into four main types, each designed for different applications:

    • Type 1: Common laboratory funnels with a smooth inner surface, further divided into:
      • Class A – Short stem
      • Class B – Long stem
      • Class C – Without stem
    • Type 2: Laboratory funnels with a fluted inner wall (grooved design), divided into:
      • Class A – Short stem
      • Class B – Long stem
    • Type 3: Ribbed inner wall funnels with raised ribs extending from the rim toward the stem, also divided into Class A and B.
    • Type 4: Filling or powder funnels with short, wide-diameter stems for rapid transfer of powders or granules.
  • Material and Thermal Performance
Funnels must be manufactured from laboratory-grade glass meeting ASTM E438 specifications and must conform to maximum permissible thermal residual stress requirements per ASTM E671.

  • Dimensional and Design Criteria
The standard specifies dimensions for funnel body, stem length, diameter, and wall thickness, ensuring compatibility and interchangeability in laboratory settings. Each funnel must have a securely sealed bowl and stem, and designs must prevent flow restrictions during use.

  • Marking and Identification
Each funnel must be permanently marked with the manufacturer's name or trademark, ensuring traceability and quality assurance.

Applications

ASTM E1095-99(2022) laboratory glass funnels are widely used for:

  • General Liquid Transfer: Ensuring safe and accurate pouring of liquids into containers with narrow openings.
  • Filtration: Used with filter paper to separate solids from liquids in analytical and preparative laboratory procedures.
  • Powder and Granular Transfers: Type 4 funnels specifically facilitate the handling and decanting of powders and granules without spillage.
  • Sample Preparation: Essential in analytical laboratories, clinical labs, research institutions, and educational laboratory environments for preparing samples and reagents.

The standard supports laboratory glassware procurement and quality control processes by providing requirements for performance, design, and packaging. Laboratories, manufacturers, and suppliers rely on ASTM E1095-99(2022) to ensure compatibility, safety, and durability of glass funnels in scientific workflows.
