Overview

ASTM D4376-15(2020), Standard Specification for Vapor-Degreasing Grade Perchloroethylene, defines the quality, required properties, and corresponding test methods for perchloroethylene (tetrachloroethylene) specifically intended for vapor degreasing applications. This standard, published by ASTM International, ensures consistency, safety, and regulatory compliance for organizations using perchloroethylene as an industrial solvent. The specification is developed with international principles in mind, as outlined by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Key Topics

  • Material Scope: Covers vapor-degreasing grade perchloroethylene, a chlorinated solvent widely used for metal cleaning.
  • Physical and Chemical Properties: Specifies requirements for specific gravity, distillation range, acidity, alkalinity, water content, nonvolatile residue, appearance, color, halides content, acid acceptance, copper corrosion, and total impurities.
  • Test Methods: References multiple ASTM test methods including:
    • D2111 (specific gravity)
    • D2989 (acidity and alkalinity)
    • D3401 (water content)
    • D2108 (color)
    • D3741 (appearance)
    • D2109 (nonvolatile residue)
    • D2988 (halides)
    • D2942 (acid acceptance)
    • D6806 (total impurities)
  • Packaging and Labeling: Requires compliance with US Department of Transportation (49 CFR 100-199) and OSHA Hazard Communication Standards (29 CFR 1910.1200).
  • Units of Measurement: Defines requirements in SI units with no alternative units permitted.
  • Safety and Environmental Considerations: Emphasizes the responsibility of users to establish safety, health, and environmental practices, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Applications

Vapor-degreasing grade perchloroethylene, as defined by ASTM D4376-15(2020), is widely used in:

  • Industrial Metal Cleaning: Used in vapor degreasing machines to remove oils, greases, and contaminants from metal surfaces before further processing, coating, or assembly.
  • Precision Cleaning: Suitable for cleaning sensitive or intricate mechanical parts where residue and high-purity requirements are critical.
  • Component Manufacturing: Applied in automotive, aerospace, medical device, and electronics industries to achieve rigorous cleanliness standards.
  • Solvent Recovery Systems: The specification ensures the quality needed for perchloroethylene to be effectively recycled and reused in closed-loop solvent cleaning systems.

Implementing this ASTM standard enables manufacturers, suppliers, and users to:

  • Ensure consistent solvent performance
  • Support process reliability and product quality
  • Demonstrate regulatory due diligence and reduce liability
