Standard Specification for Protective Headgear Used in Martial Arts

ABSTRACT
This specification delas with the performance requirements for head protection used for training and competition in martial arts such as karate, wushu, and taekwondo, where normal contact between participants may be repeated, but is limited to a level that is not intended to produce injury. These activities typically take place in indoor or outdoor environments where the temperature is moderate. This specification recognizes the desirability of a lightweight and streamlined construction, and ventilation; however it is a performance specification, and is not intended to restrict design. Headgears shall be tested for the following and using the following test methods: reference marking, configuration, materials, projections, vision, retention test, stability or roll-off test, low-energy falling impact test, high-energy falling impact test, low-energy striking impact test, high-energy striking impact test, and high and low speed errors. The apparatus which shall be used are the test headforms, stability test instruments and equipment, falling impact test instruments and equipment, and striking impact instruments and equipment. The significance and use, conditioning environments, and test schedule are also detailed.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers performance requirements for head protection used for training and competition in martial arts such as karate, wushu, and taekwondo, where normal contact between participants may be repeated, but is limited to a level that is not intended to produce injury. These activities typically take place in indoor or outdoor environments where the temperature is moderate. This specification recognizes the desirability of a lightweight and streamlined construction, and ventilation; however it is a performance specification, and is not intended to restrict design.
1.2 All testing and requirements of this specification shall be in accordance with Test Methods F1446, except where noted in this specification.
1.3 Partial utilization of this standard is prohibited. Any statement of compliance with this specification shall be a certification that the product meets all of the requirements of the specification in its entirety. A product that fails to meet any one of the requirements of this specification is considered to have failed the specification, and shall not be distributed or sold with any indication that it meets parts of the specification.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers the materials, sizing, and manufacturing details of test headforms for use in the testing of protective headgear. This specification identifies the requirements for five test headform size codes: A, E, J, M, and O. All datum levels shall be quoted relative to the reference plane. The headforms shall be symmetrical about the midsagittal plane. Internal geometry may be defined to satisfy the requirements of the individual test specifications. The impact headforms shall be made of K1A-F magnesium, with the prescribed zirconium and magnesium composition, and shall conform to the specified requirements for: external dimensions, performance (resonant frequency), mass, and center of gravity. All impact headforms shall be marked with: headform size, basic plane, reference plane, and midsagittal (longitudinal) and coronal (transverse) planes through the vertical axis. Other headforms shall be made of material of sufficient strength and stiffness to maintain their geometry during testing and shall comply to the external dimension requirements.

1.2 The purpose of this specification is to provide reliable and repeatable test methods for the evaluation of protective headgear for women’s adult and youth lacrosse training and play. When designated optional equipment by lacrosse governing bodies, it is important that it not increase the risk of injury to players who choose not to wear it. Impacts from stick, ball, other player, ground, or other objects may be decreased in severity by use of this headgear. However, the relationship between impact and injury is not fully understood.  
1.3 No headgear can provide protection against all impacts, foreseeable or not. This specification does not address the potential for injury from any type of impact.

Studies have shown higher risk to the head and face for this sport as compared to recreational street riding; therefore, this specification requires impact protection over a larger area of the head than Specification F1447 and the CPSC standard. This specification also provides performance criteria for helmets equipped with chin bars.  
1.2 All testing and requirements of this specification shall be in accordance with Test Methods F1446 except where noted herein.  
1.3 Partial utilization of this specification is prohibited. Any statement of compliance with this specification shall be a certification that the headgear with faceguard meets all of the requirements of the specification in their entirety. A headgear with faceguard that fails to meet any one of the requirements of this specification is considered to have failed the specification, and shall not be sold with any indication that it meets parts of the specification.  
1.4 Headgear designed to comply with this and other standards may proclaim uses as certified by the manufacturer.  
1.5 This standard is subject to revision at any time by ASTM. It must be reviewed every five years and if not revised either reapproved or withdrawn. References to the standard must include the version date. No references to a version that has been replaced or withdrawn shall be placed on any product or its packaging manufactured more than 24 months after the effective revision or withdrawal date.
