The materials shall conform to the specified chemical composition requirements for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, columbium, tantalum, nitrogen, and iron. Tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and Brinell or Rockwell hardness of the alloys shall also meet the specified mechanical property requirements.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification2 covers UNS N08020 alloy plate, sheet, and strip.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to become familiar with all hazards including those identified in the appropriate Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for this product/material as provided by the manufacturer, to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices, and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Overview
ASTM B463-21 is the standard specification for UNS N08020 alloy plate, sheet, and strip, published by ASTM International. This document outlines the requirements for the chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, and tolerances for plate, sheet, and strip products produced from the UNS N08020 (also covering UNS N08026 and UNS N08024) nickel-iron-chromium alloy family. Products furnished under this standard are intended for use where superior corrosion resistance and strength are required in harsh environments, especially those involving chemical processing.
Key Topics
- Material Scope: Covers plate, sheet, and strip products made from UNS N08020, N08026, and N08024 alloys.
- Heat Treatment: Specifies annealing conditions, such as stabilized annealing for UNS N08020 to optimize corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
- Chemical Composition: Requires compliance with specified limits for elements including carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, columbium (niobium), tantalum, and iron.
- Mechanical Properties: Sets minimum requirements for tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness (Brinell or Rockwell B).
- Dimensions and Tolerances: Products must adhere to specified thickness and width tolerances, drawing on ASTM B906 for general requirements.
- Supplementary Testing: Optional intergranular corrosion testing in accordance with ASTM A262 can be specified for enhanced quality assurance.
- Safety Considerations: Emphasizes user responsibility for understanding and managing all relevant health, safety, and environmental precautions, in accordance with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and local regulations.
Applications
ASTM B463-21 provides critical requirements for industries that demand durable and corrosion-resistant materials, especially in applications such as:
- Chemical Processing Equipment: Heat exchangers, tanks, piping, and vessels where resistance to aggressive chemicals is needed.
- Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: Equipment and surfaces in direct contact with reactive substances.
- Petrochemical Industry: Piping and storage for high-sulfur or acidic environments.
- Food Processing: Surfaces exposed to corrosive foodstuffs and cleaning agents.
- Marine Environments: Structures exposed to saltwater or brine.
- Pollution Control Systems: Components requiring long service life in corrosive atmospheres.
UNS N08020, in particular, is valued for resistance to pitting, stress-corrosion cracking, and intergranular attack, making it suitable for environments unsuitable for standard stainless steels.
Related Standards
For effective implementation and compliance, ASTM B463-21 references and aligns with several related standards:
- ASTM A262: Practices for detecting susceptibility to intergranular attack in austenitic stainless steels - relevant for corrosion testing.
- ASTM B906: Specification for general requirements for flat-rolled nickel and nickel alloys plate, sheet, and strip - provides dimensional and other baseline requirements.
- ASME SB-463: The ASME specification harmonizes with ASTM B463 for use in boiler and pressure vessel construction.
Adhering to ASTM B463-21 ensures that UNS N08020 alloy plate, sheet, and strip products meet recognized international quality and performance benchmarks, providing confidence in their suitability for critical applications demanding excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical reliability.
