Standard Specification for Packing, Fiberglass, Braided, Rope, and Wick
ABSTRACT
This specification covers the general requirements and testing procedures for wick (Type I), rope (Type II), and braided (Type III) fiberglass packing used for boiler, furnace, and other high-temperature equipment seals. The material used for construction shall be a continuous, high-density-type ETG fiberglass material. Asbestos and other asbestos-containing components are disallowed. Each type of packing shall be manufactured according to the manufacturer's design, as follows: Type I shall be composed of twisted plied strands made into braids; Type II shall be laid up into the general form of a wick; and Type III shall be a loosely twisted rope. Unless otherwise specified, packing shall adhere to the dimensional values provided herein.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the general requirements and tests for braided, rope, and wick fiberglass packing used for boiler, furnace, and other high-temperature equipment seals for service temperatures up to 1000°F (538°C).
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

Overview
ASTM F2087-13(2019) - "Standard Specification for Packing, Fiberglass, Braided, Rope, and Wick" - defines the requirements for fiberglass packings such as braided, rope, and wick types, utilized in high-temperature sealing applications. Developed by ASTM International, this standard supports the manufacturing, testing, and quality assurance of fiberglass packing intended for use in boilers, furnaces, and other high-temperature equipment where service temperatures reach up to 1000°F (538°C).
The standard outlines classifications, dimensional tolerances, material specifications, testing procedures, as well as requirements regarding packaging, labeling, and certification. Compliance with this standard helps ensure product consistency, safety, and performance for both manufacturers and end-users, reflecting international best practices as recognized by the World Trade Organization's Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
Key Topics
- Material Requirements: Specifies the use of continuous, high-density-type ETG fiberglass. Asbestos and any asbestos-containing materials are strictly prohibited for health and safety reasons.
- Product Types and Construction:
- Type I Wick: Made of twisted, plied strands, typically braided.
- Type II Rope: Laid up into a rope form, loosely twisted.
- Type III Braided: Braided from fiberglass strands, usually in square sections.
- Dimensional Specifications: The document provides reference tables for standard sizes and tolerances for each packing type, ensuring compatibility and interchangeability.
- Testing and Inspection: Stipulates test methods for material quality, dimensional accuracy, and weight, using recognized ASTM procedures. Number of splices, specimen preparation, and test documentation are also defined.
- Quality and Certification: Emphasizes the need for robust quality systems, such as ISO 9000 compliance, and requires certification of conformance and test results when specified by contract.
- Packaging and Marking: Commercial packaging must meet ASTM D3951 or as otherwise negotiated. Proper labeling with part numbers and standard references is required for traceability.
Applications
Fiberglass packing as specified in ASTM F2087-13(2019) is widely used in industries requiring dependable high-temperature seals. Typical applications include:
- Boilers and Furnaces: Ensuring secure, heat-resistant seals in high-temperature environments.
- Industrial Equipment: Suited for sealing doors, access panels, and other parts exposed to elevated temperatures.
- Shipbuilding and Marine Technology: Used for insulation and sealing in marine boilers and related high-temperature equipment.
- Power Generation and Processing Facilities: Enhances safety and operational reliability where thermal resistance and dimensional stability are critical.
By adhering to this specification, organizations can assure product performance, support regulatory compliance, and minimize risks associated with poor-quality materials.
Related Standards
Several referenced and related standards help provide a comprehensive framework for selecting and testing fiberglass packing materials:
- ASTM D578: Standard Specification for Glass Fiber Strands - details base material requirements for fiberglass products.
- ASTM D3951: Practice for Commercial Packaging - covers commercial packaging standards.
- ISO 9000 Series: International standards for quality management systems, essential for quality assurance in material production.
- Historical ASTM D4268: Test Methods for Fiber Ropes (withdrawn) - previously provided specific testing guidance relevant to rope-type packing.
Organizations implementing ASTM F2087-13(2019) should familiarize themselves with these and other applicable regulations to ensure full compliance and optimal product performance.
