Overview
ASTM D6189-97(2022), titled Standard Practice for Evaluating the Efficiency of Chemical Removers for Organic Coatings, is an international standard developed by ASTM International. This standard provides a practical process to evaluate the effectiveness of chemical coatings removers-commonly used to strip paint, varnish, lacquer, and related organic coatings-from wood and metal substrates. The procedure allows manufacturers, contractors, restorers, and quality assurance professionals to compare and rate the efficiency of various paint and coatings removal products.
Removing old coatings effectively is critical for surface preparation before recoating, restoration, or maintenance. Adhering to this standard ensures reliable comparison of coatings remover products using consistent and repeatable test conditions.
Key Topics
- Evaluation Method: This practice details a systematic process for assessing chemical remover performance on both clear and pigmented organic coatings.
- Test Panels: The method involves preparation of wood or metal panels coated with standard finishes such as latex enamel, alkyd enamel, polyurethane, varnish, shellac, or lacquer.
- Application and Removal: Chemical removers are applied in line with manufacturer instructions, followed by a specified waiting period. Coatings are then mechanically lifted, and the effectiveness is rated.
- Rating Scheme: Coatings removal efficiency is quantified on a numerical scale (5-0) indicating the percentage of coating removed, along with a separate evaluation of the substrate's condition post-removal.
- Reporting Requirements: The standard calls for the documentation of key details, including the type of coating remover tested, substrate material, application method, removal times, and observations on substrate effect.
- Safety and Compliance: Recognizes the importance of following appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and assessing regulatory limitations.
Applications
The ASTM D6189-97(2022) standard is widely applicable in industries where surface preparation and restoration are essential. Practical uses include:
- Paint Removal for Recoating Projects: Ensuring the efficient stripping of old coatings from wood and metal before repainting or refinishing.
- Product Development and Quality Control: Manufacturers of chemical removers use this standard both for product testing and competitive benchmarking.
- Restoration and Conservation: Restoration professionals evaluate and select removers suitable for delicate or historic surfaces, minimizing substrate damage.
- Performance Claims and Certification: Enables objective substantiation of product performance in marketing and technical communications.
- Regulatory Compliance and Safety: Helps users comply with workplace safety standards and environmental regulations by standardizing test methods.
Related Standards
For comprehensive coatings assessment and surface preparation, the following ASTM standards are commonly referenced alongside ASTM D6189-97(2022):
- ASTM D609: Practice for Preparation of Cold-Rolled Steel Panels for Testing Paint, Varnish, Conversion Coatings, and Related Products
