Standard Specification for Circular-Knit Geotextile for Use in Subsurface Drainage Applications

ABSTRACT
This specification covers circular-knit geotextiles for use on the outside of perforated pipes and Class B geocomposites in subsurface drainage applications. Material covered by this specification comprises Type A and Type B fabric geotextiles, which have been used extensively as filtration geotextiles in combination with subsurface drainage pipes. The geotextile shall be manufactured from polymeric materials by a circular-knit process, which will ensure a consistent, continuous fabric without seams. Tests for water permittivity, apparent opening size, and puncture strength shall be performed and shall conform to the requirements specified. Per service requirement, additional tests for chemical resistance and durability may be performed as well.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers circular-knit geotextiles for use on the outside of perforated pipes and Class B geocomposites per Specification D7001 in drainage applications.
1.2 The tests used to characterize the geotextile are intended to ensure good workmanship and quality, and are not necessarily adequate for design purposes in view of the importance of environmental factors and specific performance objectives. Tests have been selected with essentially neutral aqueous systems in mind. Other tests may be necessary to establish chemical resistance and durability under the conditions of a particular application.
1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM D6707/D6707M-06(2019) Standard Specification for Circular-Knit Geotextile for Use in Subsurface Drainage Applications provides comprehensive requirements for circular-knit geotextiles used with perforated pipes and geocomposites in subsurface drainage systems. Developed by ASTM International, this standard addresses the quality, workmanship, physical properties, and testing criteria necessary for geotextile materials manufactured using the circular-knit process. The specification is widely recognized for ensuring consistent performance and reliability in drainage filtration applications.

Key Topics

  • Material Requirements: Geotextiles must be produced from polymeric materials using a circular-knit process. This ensures a seamless, continuous fabric well-suited for enveloping perforated drainage pipes and geocomposites.

  • Classification: The standard specifies two main types of geotextile fabrics, Type A and Type H, each meeting defined performance criteria appropriate for subsurface drainage applications.

  • Physical Properties: Key performance aspects covered include:

    • Water permittivity
    • Apparent opening size (AOS)
    • Puncture strength
  • Testing Procedures: Standardized tests are required to verify performance:

    • Water permeability of geotextiles (per ASTM D4491/D4491M)
    • Apparent opening size (ASTM D4751)
    • Static puncture strength (ASTM D6241)
  • Quality Assurance: Suppliers must confirm that geotextiles meet all requirements stated in the specification, providing confidence for engineers, contractors, and inspectors.

Applications

Circular-knit geotextiles designed under ASTM D6707/D6707M are primarily applied in:

  • Subsurface Drainage Systems: Wrapped around perforated drainage pipes to filter soil and prevent particle intrusion while allowing water flow.
  • Class B Geocomposites: Used in conjunction with geocomposite drains for pavement edge drainage and high-flow applications, often specified under ASTM D7001.
  • Soil Filtration: Serve as filter fabrics to balance adequate water flow with limited soil loss, safeguarding the longevity and functionality of drainage structures.
  • Repair and Field Application: The specification provides guidance on field repairs, ensuring damaged geotextile fabric can be effectively patched using matching materials and secure attachment methods.

These geotextiles are favored for their seamless construction, robust filtering properties, and adaptability to a range of soil and environmental conditions encountered in civil construction and infrastructure projects.
