Standard Guide for Recordkeeping Microfiltration and Ultrafiltration Systems

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 Proper operation and maintenance of an MF or UF system are key factors in obtaining successful performance. This guide provides the necessary input for the evaluation of the performance of the MF/UF system, the pretreatment system, and the mechanical equipment in the plant.
4.2 This guide is for general guidance only and must not be used in place of the operating manual for a particular plant.
4.3 Site-dependent factors prevent specific recommendations for all recordkeeping. Thus, only the more general recordkeeping is covered by this guide.
4.4 This guide can be used for both surface and ground water and systems which contain either spiral-wound or hollow-fiber devices.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide covers procedures for well-defined recordkeeping of microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) systems.
1.2 This guide includes a start-up report, recordkeeping of MF/UF operating data, recordkeeping of pretreatment operating data, and a maintenance log.
1.3 This guide is applicable to waters including surface water, ground water and some wastewater (secondary effluent) but is not applicable to membrane bioreactors or process streams.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

The ASTM D7285-06(2017) standard, titled "Standard Guide for Recordkeeping Microfiltration and Ultrafiltration Systems," provides a structured framework for the systematic collection and maintenance of records associated with microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) water treatment systems. Developed by ASTM International, this guide emphasizes the importance of comprehensive recordkeeping to support the effective operation, performance evaluation, and maintenance of MF/UF systems used in water treatment facilities.

This standard is applicable to systems treating surface water, ground water, and some types of wastewater (secondary effluent), but not membrane bioreactors or industrial process streams. It supports plant operators and managers in fulfilling data collection practices necessary for system performance, regulatory compliance, and long-term operational integrity.

Key Topics

The standard covers several critical areas relevant to microfiltration and ultrafiltration system recordkeeping:

  • Start-Up Reporting

    • Documenting a full description of the facility, including flow diagrams, equipment, and instrumentation lists
    • Recording initial performance data for pretreatment and membrane filtration systems
  • MF/UF Operating Data

    • Monitoring and recording permeate and reject volumes/flow rates
    • Regularly capturing feed, permeate, and transmembrane pressures for each skid
    • Logging temperature, pH, and turbidity of feed and permeate streams
    • Performing routine calibration of gauges and meters as specified by manufacturers
    • Noting unusual events such as upsets or shutdowns
  • Pretreatment Operating Data

    • Tracking pretreatment equipment performance and chemical consumption
    • Recording well and feed pump pressures and pre-filter pressures at set intervals
  • Maintenance Log

    • Documenting all routine maintenance and repairs
    • Tracking replacement and addition of components and equipment
    • Keeping a record of integrity tests and significant cleaning or replacement events
  • Recommended Data Collection Frequency

    • Outlining suggested intervals (e.g., every 4 hours, daily, monthly) for various parameters to ensure consistent oversight and documentation

Applications

Effective recordkeeping, as outlined in ASTM D7285-06(2017), provides a range of practical benefits for operators, engineers, and managers of water treatment systems, including:

  • Compliance and Quality Assurance

    • Ensuring data are available for regulatory reporting requirements
    • Facilitating audits by demonstrating system oversight and maintenance
  • Performance Evaluation

    • Allowing for the trending of key operational parameters
    • Supporting early detection of process issues or membrane fouling
  • Maintenance Planning

    • Creating comprehensive maintenance logs for scheduling and tracking service events
    • Enabling better lifecycle management of equipment and components
  • Continuous Improvement

    • Using recorded data to optimize system performance and identify opportunities for operational enhancements

Facilities that implement these guidelines are better positioned to maintain efficient, reliable, and compliant MF/UF water treatment operations.
