(Specification)Standard Specification for Entrainment Separators for Use in Marine Piping Applications
Standard Specification for Entrainment Separators for Use in Marine Piping Applications
ABSTRACT
This specification covers the minimum requirements for the pressure-temperature rating, testing, and making of pressure-containing vessels for entrainment separators. Entrainment separators covered in this specification shall be designed according to the lowest pressure-temperature rating of any individual component, or as established by proof tests. Test water temperature and entrainment separator temperature must be at equilibrium before hydrostatic test pressure is applied. All possible air pockets must be purged while the entrainment separator vessel is being filled with water. External equipment not to be pressurized with the entrainment separator should be isolated or disconnected before applying the hydrostatic test pressure. Hydrostatic test pressure shall be applied gradually to the entrainment separator and held stationary at each increment for a sufficient time in order that a visual inspection can be made for leaks or deformation of the vessel.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the minimum requirements for the pressure-temperature rating, testing, and making of pressure-containing vessels for entrainment separators.
1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.3 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to the test methods portion, Section 6, of this specification: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview
ASTM F1006-86(2022), Standard Specification for Entrainment Separators for Use in Marine Piping Applications, defines the essential requirements for entrainment separators used in marine piping. This international standard sets forth minimum criteria for the pressure-temperature rating, testing, and fabrication of pressure-containing vessels that comprise these separators. Developed by ASTM, this specification ensures safety, reliability, and performance in harsh marine environments through clear guidelines for design, construction, and testing procedures.
Key Topics
- Pressure-Temperature Ratings: Establishes design limits based on the lowest-rated component within the entrainment separator assembly, or on proof testing results.
- Testing Requirements: Specifies detailed hydrostatic testing procedures, including pressure-holding times for visual inspections and the need for equilibrium between water and vessel temperature.
- Materials and Construction: Outlines minimum requirements for materials, compliance with referenced standards (such as ASME and ANSI), and mandates the use of high-quality, certified materials for both separator bodies and bolting.
- Marking and Traceability: Requires permanent marking with vital information, including manufacturer details, pressure ratings, serial numbers, and compliance references.
- Safety and Compliance: Emphasizes user responsibility to follow safety, health, and environmental regulations while highlighting that this standard covers only specific aspects of safety.
Applications
Entrainment separators covered by ASTM F1006-86(2022) are crucial components in marine piping systems. These mechanical devices effectively separate entrained liquids from gas or vapor streams, using methods such as centrifugal force or baffles. Applications include:
- Shipboard Steam and Gas Systems: Ensuring dry gas supply in propulsion and auxiliary systems by removing condensate or moisture that could damage equipment.
- Cargo Handling: Used in tanker and freighter fluid transfer systems to separate water from fuel or cargo gases.
- Cooling and Process Piping: Preventing water hammer and protecting pumps, compressors, and turbines in critical marine processes.
- Marine HVAC and Comfort Systems: Improving the efficiency and lifespan of equipment by maintaining dry air or steam in climate control piping.
Adhering to this specification ensures reliability and longevity of marine piping infrastructure, while minimizing maintenance costs and operational risk.
Related Standards
ASTM F1006-86(2022) references several key national and international standards for compliance and interoperability, including:
- ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Section II, Section VIII): Governs design calculations and material requirements for pressure vessels.
- ANSI B16 Series: Covers various pipe flanges, threaded fittings, and non-ferrous piping components used in separator construction.
- MSS-SP-51: Specifies requirements for corrosion-resistant flanges and fittings.
- Military Standard MIL-F-1183: Pertains to cast bronze and silver-brazed fittings relevant in defense and naval applications.
These referenced documents ensure that entrainment separators integrate seamlessly with a wide range of marine piping components and conform to globally recognized engineering practices.
Practical Value
Utilizing ASTM F1006-86(2022) in the design, construction, and testing of entrainment separators helps shipbuilders, system integrators, and marine engineers meet international benchmarks for safety and performance. Implementation facilitates:
- Regulatory compliance in international trade and marine operations
- Reduced downtime and maintenance through clear testing protocols
- Enhanced equipment reliability and crew safety
