Standard Specification for Copper-Nickel-Silicon Alloy Rod and Bar

ABSTRACT
This specification establishes the requirements for copper-nickel-silicon alloy rods and bars in straight lengths produced from Copper Alloy UNS No. C64700. The materials for manufacture shall be cast billets or ingots of such soundness and structure as to be suitable for processing by hot extrusion or rolling, and finished by cold working, annealing, cooling, straightening, and precipitation heat treatment to produce finished products that achieve the required properties. Products shall be tested and shall adhere to dimensional (diameter, length, straightness, and edge contour), mechanical (tensile and yield strength, and elongation), electrical resistivity, and chemical composition requirements.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification establishes the requirements for copper-nickel-silicon alloy rod and bar produced from Copper Alloy UNS No. C64700 in straight lengths.
1.2 Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.
1.3 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM B411/B411M-14(2019) is the standard specification developed by ASTM for copper-nickel-silicon alloy rod and bar, specifically those produced from Copper Alloy UNS No. C64700. This standard covers straight-length rods and bars that are manufactured from cast billets or ingots and subsequently processed through hot extrusion or rolling, followed by cold working, annealing, straightening, and precipitation heat treatment. These processes ensure that the finished products achieve the required mechanical, dimensional, and physical properties.

The standard delineates rigorous requirements for the chemical composition, mechanical properties (such as tensile and yield strength, and elongation), electrical resistivity, and dimensional tolerances. ASTM B411/B411M-14(2019) is recognized internationally, being developed in accordance with principles established by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Key Topics

  • Material Composition
Products covered under this specification must conform to defined chemical composition limits for key elements like nickel, silicon, lead, iron, zinc, and copper (with copper serving as the remainder element).

  • Manufacturing Methods
The standard outlines that rods and bars must be processed from billets or ingots of Copper Alloy UNS C64700, offering guidelines for hot extrusion or rolling, cold working, annealing, straightening, and precipitation heat treatment to achieve intended properties.

  • Mechanical and Physical Requirements

    • Tensile and Yield Strength: Products must meet specified minimum tensile and yield strength values depending on their size and cross-sectional form, as detailed in the standard.
    • Electrical Resistivity: Finished rods and bars must comply with mass resistivity and electrical conductivity requirements, ensuring suitability for electrical applications.
  • Dimensional Tolerances
The standard prescribes detailed tolerances for diameter, width, thickness, length, straightness, and edge contours, referencing additional requirements from ASTM B249/B249M.

  • Quality Assurance and Testing
The specification integrates requirements for sampling, inspection, test methods, certification, mill test reports, and packaging. It references other ASTM standards for specific test methods regarding chemical and mechanical property verification.

Applications

Copper-nickel-silicon alloy rods and bars manufactured in compliance with ASTM B411/B411M-14(2019) are widely used in industries demanding high-strength, corrosion-resistant, and electrically conductive components. Typical applications include:

  • Electrical Connectors and Components: Due to the specified electrical conductivity requirements, these alloys are ideal for electrical contact materials.
  • Mechanical Hardware: The mechanical strength and wear resistance achieved through precise temper processing make these rods and bars suitable for gears, fasteners, springs, and automotive parts.
  • Marine and Industrial Equipment: The corrosion resistance of copper-nickel-silicon alloys allows their deployment in marine hardware, valves, pump components, and fluid handling systems.
  • Defense and Aerospace: Approved for use by U.S. Department of Defense agencies, compliant products are employed in critical systems where performance and reliability are essential.

Related Standards

Organizations and manufacturers working with copper-nickel-silicon alloy rod and bar should also be aware of the following related ASTM standards:

  • ASTM B249/B249M: General Requirements for Wrought Copper and Copper Alloy Rod, Bar, Shapes, and Forgings
