Overview

ASTM F1311-90(2023) specifies the design and construction requirements for large-diameter fabricated carbon steel flanges, ranging in size from 14 NPS to 144 NPS. This international standard applies to flanges suitable for high temperature (up to 1000 °F) and low pressure (25 psig) applications, such as exhaust systems for internal combustion engines and forced ventilation systems. The standard aims to ensure safety, performance, and compatibility in critical piping systems across various industries.

ASTM F1311-90(2023) is developed in accordance with globally recognized principles established by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee. It provides essential criteria for selection, ordering, and inspection of carbon steel flanges for specialized service conditions.

Key Topics

  • Flange Classification:

    • Type I: Plate flanges, 14 in. to 144 in. inside diameter
    • Type II: Rolled angle flanges, 14 in. to 108 in. inside diameter
  • Dimensions and Tolerances:

    • Standardized outside and inside diameters, thicknesses, bolt circles, and bolt holes
    • Tolerances maintained for precise fit and reliable connection
  • Drilling and Bolting:

    • Identical number of holes, hole diameter, and bolt circle for both types
    • Bolt holes spaced equally on the circle with specified clearances
  • Material Requirements:

    • Standard material is carbon steel as per ASTM A36/A36M
    • ABS Grade A steel recommended for prolonged high temperature use
  • Workmanship and Finish:

    • Flanges must be free from sharp edges, weld spatter, and defects
    • Surface finish minimum 500 μin. to ensure proper gasket sealing
  • Compliance and Certification:

    • Products must conform to ASTM F1311-90(2023) specifications
    • Certification and inspection documentation may be required upon request

Applications

ASTM F1311-90(2023) is utilized in sectors where reliable large-diameter steel flanges are essential for high temperature and low pressure environments, including:

  • Internal combustion engine exhaust systems:
Ensures leak-proof, high-temperature resistant connections in industrial and marine engines.
  • Forced ventilation systems:
Supports the integrity of ducting and piping under thermal stress.
  • Shipbuilding and marine technology:
Developed under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F25, serving applications on vessels and maritime structures.
  • Industrial process piping:
Implements standardized connections for exhaust and ventilation in manufacturing plants.

The standard is also compatible with referenced documents for welding practices and material selection, including the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, American Welding Society codes, and AWWA standards.

Related Standards

ASTM F1311-90(2023) references and aligns with several other key industry standards:

  • ASTM A36/A36M: Specification for Carbon Structural Steel
  • ASTM F1155: Practice for Selection and Application of Piping System Materials
  • AWWA C207: Steel Pipe Flanges for Waterwork Service
  • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section IX: Welding qualifications for pressure vessels and piping
