Frequently Asked Questions
MT 1 is a Technical Committee within the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is named "TC 108/MT 1". This committee has published 238 standards.
MT 1 develops IEC standards in the area of Information technology. Currently, there are 238 published standards from this technical committee.
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is the world's leading organization for the preparation and publication of international standards for electrical, electronic, and related technologies. Founded in 1906, the IEC provides a global platform for companies, industries, and governments to meet, discuss, and develop the international standards they require.
A Technical Committee (TC) in IEC is a group of experts responsible for developing international standards in a specific technical area. TCs are composed of national member body delegates and work through consensus to create standards that meet global industry needs. Each TC may have subcommittees (SCs) and working groups (WGs) for specialized topics.
Applies to receiving apparatus for sound or vision, amplifiers, load and source transducers, motor-driven apparatus (radio-gramophones, tape recorders and sound-film projectors, etc.) which are to be connected to the mains, directly or indirectly, and which are intended for domestic and similar indoor use. Gives a safety and classification terminology based on IEC 60536. Specifies requirements for marking, insulation, components, electrical connections and fixings, protection against ionizing radiation, resistance to heating, mechanical strength and stability, etc., as well as a requirement for splash-proof mains operated electronic equipment. Does not apply to apparatus designed for rated supply voltage exceeding 433 V (r.m.s.) between phases in the case of three-phase supply and 250 V (r.m.s.) in all other cases. Has the status of a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104. Please refer to Guide 112 for using the current editions of IEC 60065 and IEC 60950 in evaluating the safety of multimedia equipment

IEC 60065:2014 applies to electronic apparatus designed to be fed from the mains, from a supply apparatus, from batteries or from remote power feeding and intended for reception, generation, recording or reproduction of audio, video and associated signals. It also applies to apparatus designed to be used exclusively in combination with the above-mentioned apparatus. This standard primarily concerns apparatus intended for household and similar general use but which may also be used in places of public assembly such as schools, theatres, places of worship and the workplace professional apparatus intended for use as described above is also covered unless falling specifically within the scope of other standards. This standard:
- concerns only safety aspects of the above apparatus;
- it does not concern other matters, such as style or performance. This standard applies to the above-mentioned apparatus, if designed to be connected to the telecommunication network or similar network, for example by means of an integrated modem. This eighth edition cancels and replaces the seventh edition published in 2001 including its Amendment 1 (2005) and Amendment 2 (2010). It constitutes a technical revision. The principal changes in this edition as compared with the seventh edition are as follows:
- new requirements for wall and ceiling mounting means;
- new requirements for coin/button cell batteries;
- all notes have been reviewed to comply with the new directives;
- addition of requirements for LEDs;
- requirements for creepage distances are aligned with IEC 60950-1 and a change in optocoupler requirements.
