The object of this standard is to specify definitions, classifications, characteristics and test requirements of enclosures to be used as part of switchgear and controlgear assemblies in accordance with the EN 60439 series, the rated voltage of which does not exceed 1 000 V a.c. at frequencies not exceeding 1 000 Hz, or 1 500 V d.c. and suitable for general use for either indoor or outdoor applications. This standard applies to empty enclosures, prior to the incorporation of switchgear and controlgear components by the user, as supplied by the enclosure manufacturer. This standard does not apply to enclosures which are covered by other specific products standards (e.g. IEC 60670, household and similar installations). Compliance with the safety requirements of the applicable product standard is the responsibility of the final assembly manufacturer. This standard may serve as a basis for other technical committees

Gives supplementary requirements for cable distribution cabinets (CDC), which are stationary, type-tested assemblies (TTA) for outdoor installation in places which are exposed to the public, but where only skilled persons have access to their use. They are safe for use in public three-phase systems

This standard applies to low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies (type-tested assemblies (TTA) and partially type-tested assemblies (PTTA), the rated voltage of which does not exceed 1 000 V a.c. at frequencies not exceeding 1 000 Hz, or 1 500 V d.c. This standard also applies to assemblies incorporating control and/or power equipment, the frequencies of which are higher. In this case, appropriate additional requirements shall apply. This standard applies to stationary or movable assemblies with or without enclosure. NOTE - Additional requirements for certain specific types of assemblies are given in supplementary standards. This standard applies to assemblies intended for use in connection with generation, transmission, distribution and conversion of electric energy and for the control of electric energy consuming equipment. It also applies to such assemblies designed for use under special service conditions, for example in ships, in rail vehicles, for machine tools, for hoisting equipment, or in explosive atmospheres, and for domestic (operated by unskilled persons) applications, provided that the relevant specific requirements are complied with. This standard does not apply to individual devices and self-contained components, such as motor starters, fuse switches, electronic equipment, etc., complying with their relevant standards. The object of this standard is to lay down the definitions and to state the service conditions, construction requirements, technical characteristics and tests for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies.

This standard applies to type-tested assemblies (TTA) intended for use on construction sites, i.e. temporary places of work to which the public do not generally have access and where building construction, installation, repairs, alteration or demolition of property (buildings) or civil engineering (public works) or excavation or any other similar operations are carried out. These assemblies may be transportable (semi-fixed) or mobile.

The following method is applicable to enclosed PTTA or partitioned sections of PTTA without forced ventilation. Notes 1. - The influence of the materials and wall thicknesses usually used for enclosures are negligible on the steady state temperatures. The method is therefore applicable to enclosures made of sheet steel, sheet aluminium, cast iron, insulating material and the liken 2. - For open-type and dead-front PTTA, no temperature-rise assessment is needed if it is obvious that no excessive air temperatures are likely to arise.
