CEN/TC 128/SC 8 - Slate and stone products for roofing

This European Standard specifies test methods for slate and carbonate slate for roofing and wall cladding. It is applicable to natural roofing products as defined in EN 12326-1 used for assembly into discontinuous roofs and external wall cladding.
NOTE   Where the term "slate" is used in this document it means slate and carbonate slate unless otherwise indicated.

This document specifies test methods for slate, carbonate slate, schist and schistose stone for discontinuous roofing and external cladding, as defined in 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 of EN 12326-1:2014 and 3.1 of prEN 12326-3:2021, used for assembly into discontinuous roofs and external wall cladding. In this sense, when the test describes a slate, it could also be considered as carbonate slate.

This European standard specifies the performance requirements and corresponding test methods for roofing slate products of schist and schistose stone types as defined in 3.2 and 3.3 and uses for assembly into discontinuous roofing.
This European standard provides also for the evaluation of conformity and for marking of the roofing slate products.
This European standard covers als characteristics that are of importance to the trade.
This European standard does not cover roofing slate and carboante slate, for mhich EN 12326-1 and EN 12326-2 applies. It does not cover treated roofing slates, for which prEN 12326-4 applies.
This European Standard is not apllicable to bonded cladding (cladding fixed with adhesives) and cladding fixed with dowels and cramps. In these cases EN 1469 applies.
The performance of a roof or wall constructed with these products depends not only on the properties of the product as required by this document, but also on the design, construction and performance of the roof or wall as a whole in relation to the environment and conditions in use. This standard does not cover installation or construction specific requirements.

TThis European Standard specifies requirements for slate and stone products for roofing and external cladding, as defined in 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3, used for assembly into discontinuous roofing and external cladding (except bonded cladding).
This European Standard does not apply to products for roofing or external cladding made from the following:
a) stone other than those defined in 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3;
b) concrete;
c) polymeric materials;
d) fibre reinforced cement;
e) metal;
f) clay.
This European Standard is not applicable to roofing and cladding slates used internally.
NOTE 1   Requirements for internal wall lining slate are specified in prEN 1469.
This European Standard is not applicable to bonded cladding (cladding fixed with adhesives).
For the purposes of this European Standard, slates for roofing and external cladding have been classified according to the product type and the stone from which they are made.
This European Standard does not include requirements for appearance.
NOTE 2   Some general guidance for appearance is given in annex A.
