CEN/TC 127/WG 4 - Reaction to fire
Reaction to fire
General Information
This document specifies a method of test for determining the reaction to fire performance of construction products excluding floorings, and excluding products which are indicated in Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/364, when exposed to thermal attack by a single burning item (SBI). The calculation procedures are given in Annex A. Information on the precision of the test method is given in Annex B. The calibration procedures are given in Annexes C and D, of which Annex C is a normative annex.
NOTE This document has been developed to determine the reaction to fire performance of essentially flat products. The treatment of some families of products, e.g. linear products (pipes, ducts, cables etc.), can need special rules.

This European Standard specifies a test method to determine the propensity (ability) of a building product to smoulder continuously when exposed to an open flame under the influence of natural convective airflow.
It is intended for all building products classified according to EN 13501 1. Details as to how the products is mounted and fixed for this test are given in the relevant product standards. The field of application of the test results is defined in the product standards.

The measuring technique of the SBI (single burning item) test instrument is based on the observation that, in general, the heats of combustion per unit mass of oxygen consumed are approximately the same for most fuels commonly encountered in fires (Huggett [12]). The mass flow, together with the oxygen concentration in the extraction system, suffices to continuously calculate the amount of heat released. Some corrections can be introduced if CO2, CO and/or H2O are additionally measured.

This European Standard describes the conditioning procedures for test specimens which will be tested according to the European standards for reaction to fire.
The rules for the selection of substrates for construction products when carrying out reaction to fire tests are also detailed in this European Standard.
This European Standard does not contain requirements for
- the pre-drying of test specimens for the non-combustibility test according EN ISO 1182;
- methods of cleaning (e.g. washing) and other methods for the assessment of durability aspects, which are dealt with in the relevant product standards.

This European Standard specifies a test method to evaluate the reaction to fire performance of building products. A fire is simulated which under well-ventilated conditions starts in a corner of a small room with a single open doorway.
The method is intended to evaluate the contribution of a surface product to fire growth in a room configuration, using a specified ignition source. It constitutes a reference test for this type of product within the European classification system for reaction to fire performance of construction products.
The method is particularly suitable for construction products which cannot be tested in their end use application in a small or intermediate laboratory scale. The method can also be used to assess the effect of an insulating substrate on the product performance.
A test performed in accordance with the method specified in this European Standard provides data for the early stages of a fire from ignition up to flashover.
The method is not intended to evaluate floor coverings. It may not be suitable for some free-standing products because their integrity, when exposed to fire, could have a decisive influence on their behaviour.
NOTE The term “surface product” as used in the title and scope of this European Standard specifically relates to internal surface linings, assemblies, pipes and pipe insulation products used in buildings.

This guidance document is intended to provide basic rules, which are generally valid for the mounting & fixing of construction products in the reaction to fire test standards EN 13823, EN ISO 9239-1 and EN ISO 11925-2 which are referred to in the classification standard EN 13501-1. The mounting & fixing rules are intended to ensure that the reaction to fire test results in these tests are representative of the product behaviour in one or more end-use applications when exposed to a fire in the relevant fire scenario.
This document contains for each of the test methods the compulsory rules (given in EN 13501-1, EN 13238 and the relevant test standard) and recommendations for groups or (sub)families of products.
