SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007 is the Slovenian adoption of the European Standard EN 50085-2-1:2006 from CENELEC. It specifies requirements and tests for cable trunking systems (CTS) and cable ducting systems (CDS) used to contain insulated conductors, cables and, where needed, other electrical equipment in electrical and communication installations up to 1 000 V a.c. and 1 500 V d.c. It is intended to be read with EN 50085-1:2005, which provides the general requirements for the series.
What does SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007 specify?
SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007 specifies the particular requirements for CTS and CDS intended for mounting on walls and ceilings. The document supplements and modifies Part 1, so a user needs both documents to apply the standard correctly in design, testing and product declaration.
The scope covers systems that may be embedded, flush or semi-flush mounted, surface mounted, or mounted away from the surface using fixing devices. The standard focuses on cable management products for electrical and communication installations, and it also addresses electrically protective separation where that is needed in practice.
It excludes conduit systems, cable tray systems, cable ladder systems, power track systems and equipment covered by other standards.

| Annex A | Types of CTS and CDS |
| Annex B | Annex of Part 1 applicable |
| Annex C | Annex of Part 1 applicable, normative |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007?
The main technical content is in Clauses 6 to 10, with later clauses identified for electrical, thermal, fire, external influences and EMC topics. For a manufacturer or specifier, the practical point is that the standard is not only about shape and mounting, but also about declared use, documentation, mechanical strength and protection in real installation conditions.
Classification and declared use
Clause 6 classifies CTS/CDS by installation position, liquid protection situation, type and, for CDS, resistance to compression. The installation position classes cover embedded, flush, semi-flush or surface mounted, and mounted away from the wall or ceiling using fixing devices. In practice, this means the product has to be declared for the way it will actually be installed.
Clause 6 also distinguishes Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 CTS/CDS. Type 2 provides distribution functions such as in-line junctions, direction changes and termination, while Type 3 adds apparatus mounting. This matters because buyers need to know whether the product is only for routing cables or also for mounting devices.
For some skirting-position applications, Clause 6 sets out different ways the manufacturer can declare how contact between liquids and live parts is prevented. CDS are also classified by compression resistance at several declared levels. That helps the installer choose a duct that can still accept cable pulling after site loading.
Marking and documentation
Clause 7 requires the manufacturer to provide the information needed for safe installation and use. The documentation has to identify the system components and their functions, the classification, the list of functions for Type 1 CTS/CDS, the linear impedance, the rated voltage, the usable cross-sectional area for cables, and the instructions needed to reach the declared classification and functions.
The documentation also has to include the recommended installation position needed to maintain the declared IP classification after installation. In practice, this is the part that tells installers how to mount the system so the declared performance remains valid on site.
Construction and protection against liquids
Clause 9 requires system components to fit correctly. It also sets the requirement for preventing liquids from reaching insulated conductors and live parts in the declared cases.
Where the cable area is at least 10 mm above the floor because of the design or the manufacturer’s instructions, compliance is checked by inspection and measurement. In other cases, Clause 9 uses a wet-treatment test with absorbent paper and controlled water exposure. The purpose is to show that, during floor wetting, liquid does not reach the conductors along the tested function.
Mechanical performance
Clause 10 covers the cable support test, impact resistance, linear deflection and compression resistance for CDS. The cable support tests use loaded samples to check how much a trunking or duct length sags under cable weight, with limits depending on mounting position. For the user, this tells you whether covers, separators and cable retainers stay in place and whether the system keeps its shape when filled.
The impact test checks assemblies in their intended arrangement, including fittings and apparatus mounting devices where relevant. After impact, the assembly must show no visible cracking or similar damage and must remain intact so safety is not impaired. If there is doubt, the standard checks whether the declared protection against access to hazardous parts is still maintained.
The linear deflection test applies only to CTS/CDS mounted away from the wall or ceiling using fixing devices. The permitted deflection is very small relative to the support spacing, so this is the test that confirms the product can span between supports without excessive bending.
For CDS, the compression test verifies that the duct remains usable for cable drawing-in after compression. The key practical result is that the internal space must not collapse beyond the permitted change in the inscribed circle.
Dimensions and later clauses
Clause 8 states that there are no dimension requirements in this part. Clauses 11 to 15 are present for electrical properties, thermal properties, fire effects, external influences and electromagnetic compatibility.
What terms does SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007 define?
- Cable trunking systems (CTS) - systems for containing insulated conductors, cables and possibly other electrical equipment in electrical and communication installations.
- Cable ducting systems (CDS) - systems with the same general use as CTS, with requirements that also cover compression resistance for the ducting form.
- Type 2 CTS/CDS (Distribution CTS/CDS) - CTS/CDS that provide distribution functions such as junctions, direction changes and termination.
- Type 3 CTS/CDS (Installation CTS/CDS) - Type 2 CTS/CDS that also provide an apparatus mounting function.
- Surface mounting CTS/CDS - CTS/CDS intended to be mounted on a surface.
- Flush-mounting CTS/CDS - CTS/CDS intended to sit flush with the finished surface, with at least 90 % of the product depth recessed.
- Semi-flush mounting CTS/CDS - CTS/CDS intended to fit within a mounting surface so that more than 10 % of the depth projects from the finished surface.
Who uses SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007?
Manufacturers of cable management products use SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007 to design and declare wall- and ceiling-mounted CTS/CDS. Test laboratories use it for the cable support, impact, deflection and compression tests. Installers, specifiers, quality managers and buyers use it to choose the correct product type, mounting form and declared performance for electrical and communication installations.
The standard is also relevant in building and industrial electrical installation work, where trunking or ducting must route cables neatly while maintaining access, separation and mechanical integrity.
What changed in SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007 is identified as identical to EN 50085-2-1:2006.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007?
- EN 50085-1:2005 - the general requirements part that this document is used with; it supplies the base clauses that Part 2-1 supplements or modifies.
- EN 60068-2-75:1997 - provides the hammer test method used in the environmental testing reference.
- EN 20535:1994 - gives the Cobb method for determining water absorptiveness of the absorbent paper used in the wet-treatment test.
- EN ISO 536:1996 - gives the method for determining grammage of the absorbent paper used in the wet-treatment test.
What does the SIST EN 50085-2-1:2007 document contain?
The document contains clause-by-clause requirements, test conditions and the arrangements used to verify performance. The figures show the types and applications of CTS/CDS for wall or ceiling installation, plus the set-ups for cable support, impact, linear deflection and CDS compression tests.
It also includes the classification structure, the documentation content required from the manufacturer, and the test methods that use loaded samples, absorbent paper and defined support arrangements. For anyone validating a product, these are the parts that translate the standard into a practical test plan and product declaration.
