Overview

EN 695:2005 is a European Standard published by CEN that defines the connecting dimensions for kitchen sinks used for domestic purposes. The standard covers essential interface features - including waste outlet holes, fitting areas for tap holes (single and two-hole mixer taps) and overflow holes - regardless of the sink material (stainless steel, enamelled steel, ceramics or plastics). It applies to domestic installations (including hotels, student accommodation and hospitals unless special medical provisions are required) and explicitly excludes industrial kitchen sinks.

This edition (approved July 2005) supersedes EN 695:1997 and is intended to ensure consistent, compatible connections between kitchen sinks, waste fittings and taps across CEN member states.

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability: Domestic kitchen sinks and associated dimensions for connecting fittings. Figures are illustrative and alternative designs are possible.
  • Waste outlet holes: The standard provides requirements for the position, sealing surfaces and shapes of waste outlets to ensure leak-free connections and compatibility with common waste fittings.
  • Tap hole fitting areas: Defined fitting areas and clearances for single tap holes and two-hole mixer taps, including provisions for tap pedestal clearances and tool accessibility.
  • Overflow holes: Requirements for overflow position, dimensions and clearances unless the overflow assembly is supplied with the sink or the sink has an integral overflow.
  • Normative references: EN 13310 (kitchen sinks - functional requirements and test methods) and related waste fitting guidance (EN 274-1) are referenced as essential documents.

Applications

EN 695:2005 delivers practical value for several stakeholders:

  • Manufacturers: Use the standard to design sinks with standardized connecting dimensions so accessories and waste fittings are interchangeable across products.
  • Plumbers and installers: Rely on consistent hole positions and clearances to reduce on-site modifications, speed installation and avoid leaks.
  • Specifiers and architects: Ensure compatibility of taps, waste fittings and sinks specified for residential, hospitality or institutional projects.
  • Product compliance and trade: Harmonized dimensions help meet national standards requirements and facilitate cross-border product acceptance within CEN member states.

Related Standards

  • EN 13310:2003 - Kitchen sinks: functional requirements and test methods (normative reference in EN 695:2005).
  • EN 274-1 - Waste fittings for sanitary appliances - Part 1: Requirements (bibliographic reference).

By adopting EN 695:2005, manufacturers and installers gain a consistent framework for sink connections that improves compatibility, simplifies installation and supports regulatory alignment across European markets.
