Overview

EN 4500-005:2024 - issued by CEN and prepared by ASD‑STAN - is the part of the European aerospace metallic materials rules that defines specific rules for steels. It updates and supersedes EN 4500‑005:2012 and forms part of the EN 4500 series that governs how metallic material standards for aerospace applications are drafted and presented. The document provides required wording, table formats and ordering conventions used in aerospace steel material standards, and is published in English, French and German.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and structure: Templates and mandatory layout for title, introduction, scope, normative references, terms and definitions and requirements for steel material standards.
  • Designation rules: Use of EN 10027‑1/2 for steel names and numerical designations; guidance on title completion.
  • Chemical composition: Prescribed order for listing elements (e.g. C, Si, Mn, P, S, Cr, Mo, Ni … H) and rules for reporting ratios or totals.
  • Method of melting: Standardized terminology such as air melted, vacuum induction melted, vacuum arc remelted, electro‑slag remelted, consumable electrode remelted, etc.
  • Form and production entries: Accepted form descriptions (sheets, bars, tubes, forgings, castings) and qualified production methods (rolled, cold/hot rolled, drawn, extruded, seamless/welded).
  • Table 1 template: Detailed line‑by‑line guidance (material designation, chemical composition, melting method, form, production method, limit dimensions, delivery condition, heat treatment, test pieces, mechanical tests - tensile, hardness, shear, bending, impact, creep - plus marking and dimensional inspection).
  • Annexes: Informative annexes provide worked examples for completing the title page, introduction, scope and the Table 1 entries.
  • Normative references: Key referenced standards include EN 4259, EN 4500‑001, EN 10027‑1/2 and EN 10083‑1.

Practical applications

  • Standardizes the presentation of aerospace steels to ensure clarity, traceability and consistent technical content across national standards.
  • Used when drafting new EN steel material specifications or revising existing ones to align with CEN/CENELEC internal regulations.
  • Ensures that chemical composition, manufacturing route, delivery condition, test methods and inspection requirements are consistently described for suppliers, OEMs and certification authorities.

Who should use this standard

  • Standards writers and committees preparing aerospace material standards
  • Aerospace materials engineers and metallurgists specifying steels
  • Procurement and quality assurance teams in aerospace manufacturing
  • Test laboratories, certification bodies and regulatory authorities

Related standards

  • EN 4500‑001 (General rules)
  • EN 4500 series (Parts for aluminium, titanium, heat‑resisting alloys, filler metals)
