Overview

SIST EN 2085:2005 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the technical requirements for hand and die forgings made from aluminium alloy AL-P2618A in the T6 temper state. This standard applies to forgings with a maximum dimension of 150 mm and is specifically intended for aerospace applications. It ensures a consistent level of material quality, mechanical properties, and manufacturing processes suitable for critical aerospace components.

The standard is part of the aerospace metallic materials series and complements related documents that address aluminium forging stock and technical specifications. SIST EN 2085:2005 facilitates industry-wide uniformity, safety, and reliability in the production of aerospace-grade aluminium forgings.

Key Topics

  • Material Specification

    • Aluminium alloy AL-P2618A in T6 condition.
    • Chemical composition limits for elements such as Si, Fe, Cu, Mn, Mg, Ni, Zn, Ti, and Zr.
    • Melting and forging methods as per EN 2486 standards.
  • Dimensional Scope

    • Forgings with cross-sectional dimension (a) less than or equal to 150 mm.
  • Mechanical and Physical Properties

    • Proof stress (Rp0.2) minimum values ranging from 325 to 340 MPa depending on test direction.
    • Tensile strength (Rm) between 390 and 410 MPa.
    • Minimum elongation values between 3% and 6%.
    • Typical electrical conductivity of 17.5 MS/m (T4 condition) and 21.0 MS/m (T6 condition).
    • Hardness limits defined by Brinell hardness (HB) testing.
  • Heat Treatment Procedures

    • Solution treatment at 525 °C to 535 °C followed by water quenching.
    • Aging in the range of 198 °C to 208 °C for 20 to 24 hours for T6 temper.
    • Extended solution treatment times may be required for this alloy to achieve optimal properties.
  • Testing and Quality Assurance

    • Specifications for mechanical testing samples according to EN 4400-7.
    • Inspection requirements including batch uniformity, external/internal defect evaluation, marking, and dimensional inspections.
    • Qualification programs to be agreed upon between manufacturer and purchaser.

Applications

SIST EN 2085:2005 aluminium alloy forgings are used extensively in aerospace manufacturing where strength-to-weight ratio, durability, and precision are critical. Common applications include:

  • Structural components in aircraft and spacecraft.
  • Load-bearing parts requiring high mechanical strength and toughness.
  • Components subjected to cyclic stresses and harsh operating environments.
  • Precision forgings used in aerospace engine parts and airframe assemblies.

Benefits for Industry

  • Ensures standardized manufacturing processes and consistent mechanical performance.
  • Enhances component reliability and flight safety.
  • Facilitates regulatory compliance and certification processes.
  • Supports international trade by harmonizing material standards within Europe.
