Overview

SIST EN 60670-23:2009/A11:2023 is a European standard that specifies particular requirements for floor boxes and enclosures used in electrical accessories for household and similar fixed electrical installations. Published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC), this amendment A11 updates the original Part 23 standard to ensure enhanced safety, quality, and compatibility for floor-mounted electrical installations. The standard focuses on boxes and enclosures that provide suspension means and complies with the broader framework of EN IEC 60670-1:2021 and its amendments.

This standard is vital for manufacturers, installers, and certifying bodies involved in the design, production, and implementation of floor boxes and enclosures. By adhering to SIST EN 60670-23:2009/A11:2023, stakeholders can ensure their products meet the harmonized requirements set by the European Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), thereby facilitating safe and standardized electrical installations across Europe.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability: The standard applies specifically to boxes and enclosures designed for electrical accessories in fixed household electrical installations, emphasizing floor boxes with suspension provisions.
  • Safety Requirements: It aligns with safety objectives outlined in the EU Low Voltage Directive, addressing:
    • Protection against electrical shock
    • Proper earthing provisions
    • Mechanical strength and resistance to ageing
    • Protection against ingress of solid objects and water
    • Resistance to abnormal heat, fire, and tracking
  • Construction and Design: SIST EN 60670-23:2009/A11:2023 defines construction criteria that ensure durability and protection against mechanical, thermal, and environmental influences, ensuring safe use under expected conditions.
  • Marking and Documentation: Standards for clear, durable markings on the boxes and enclosures for traceability, safe installation, and identification.
  • Compliance and Harmonization: The document ensures conformity with international and European standards, referencing related IEC publications and mandates timely implementation by member states.
  • Annexes and References: Includes normative and informative annexes explaining relationships to other standards and directives, providing comprehensive guidance for compliance.

Applications

This standard is crucial for various practical applications in residential and similar fixed electrical settings:

  • Floor Box Installation: Ensures that floor boxes used for outlets, data points, or control interfaces in residential or commercial buildings meet stringent safety and performance criteria.
  • Electrical Equipment Enclosures: Defines requirements for enclosures that protect electrical components embedded within floor constructions, minimizing risks associated with moisture, dust, or mechanical impact.
  • Building Contractors and Electricians: Provides precise criteria and testing methods to assess and select compliant floor boxes and enclosures that optimize safety and functionality.
  • Product Manufacturers: Guides design and quality assurance of floor boxes, helping manufacturers achieve harmonized product acceptance across EU markets.
  • Compliance Verification: Used by certification bodies and regulatory authorities to verify conformity and support national implementation under EU regulation.

Related Standards

  • EN IEC 60670-1:2021 / A11:2021: General requirements for boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories, which EN 60670-23 modifies specifically for floor boxes.
  • Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive): The legal framework aiming at harmonizing electrical safety standards within the EU, which this standard supports.
  • EN 60670 (Other Parts): Covering additional categories of boxes and enclosures for electrical installations in household and similar settings.
  • International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standards: Sets global norms referenced for construction, testing, and performance criteria applicable to electrical installation products.

By complying with SIST EN 60670-23:2009/A11:2023, businesses and professionals involved in electrical installation systems can assure a high level of electrical safety, durability, and regulatory compliance for floor boxes and enclosures, promoting confidence in their products and installations across Europe’s electrical infrastructure. This standard supports safer homes and workplaces by defining clear, harmonized requirements for electrical accessory enclosures embedded in floors.
