Overview
EN 62019:1999/A11:2005 is a CENELEC amendment to the European standard EN 62019:1999 that covers auxiliary contact units used with circuit‑breakers and similar equipment for household and similar installations. Published as Amendment A11 in March 2005, this document clarifies and standardizes the short‑circuit test procedure for auxiliary contacts to ensure consistent testing and reporting across CENELEC members.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to auxiliary contact units associated with circuit‑breakers and similar electrical accessories for household use (ICS 29.120.50).
- Purpose of amendment: Ensure homogeneous application of the short‑circuit test procedure in EN 62019:1999; prepared by CENELEC TC 23E.
- Short‑circuit test procedure (clause 9.3.7.3 - revised):
- The auxiliary contact may be operated several times before testing, at no load or at any current not exceeding the rated current.
- The main switching device actuator must be set to the position that corresponds to the auxiliary contact’s closed condition under test.
- The test is performed by closing a making switch, which is held closed until the short‑circuit protective device (SCPD) operates.
- The test sequence comprises three operations:
- 1st operation: closing synchronized at 0° of the voltage wave.
- 2nd operation: closing shifted by 30°.
- 3rd operation: closing shifted by a further 30°.
- After each operation the SCPDs must be replaced or reset.
- Minimum time between successive operations: not less than 3 minutes; the actual interval used must be recorded in the test report.
- Implementation dates: Amendment approved 2005‑03‑01; required national implementation by 2006‑03‑01; conflicting national standards to be withdrawn by 2008‑03‑01.
Applications and users
- Manufacturers of circuit‑breakers, auxiliary contact blocks, and household electrical accessories use this amendment to validate design and test procedures.
- Testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies apply the specified short‑circuit test sequence and reporting requirements for product certification.
- Electrical safety engineers, product compliance managers, and standards committees use the clarified procedures to harmonize testing across Europe and ensure reliable operation of auxiliary contacts in household installations.
