This European Standard establishes principles for deriving dimensions from anthropometric measurements and applying them to the design of workstations at non-mobile machinery. It is based on current ergonomic knowledge and anthropometric measurements. This European Standard specifies the body's space requirements for equipment during normal operation in sitting and standing positions. This standard does not specifically include space demands for maintenance, repairing and cleaning work.

Diese Europäische Norm legt Grundlagen zur Ableitung von Abmessungen aus anthropometrischen Maßen und ihre Anwendung bei der Gestaltung stationärer Maschinenarbeitsplätze fest. Sie basiert auf dem derzeitigen Stand ergonomischer Erkenntnisse und anthropometrischer Maße. Diese Europäische Norm legt Anforderungen an die Größe des Raumes für den menschlichen Körper bei der Betätigung von Arbeitsmitteln im Normalbetrieb in sitzender und stehender Haltung fest. Diese Norm enthält keine speziellen Raumanforderungen für Instandhaltungs-, Reparatur- und Reinigungsarbeiten.

La présente norme européenne établit les principes des dimensions provenant des mesures anthropométriques en les appliquant a la conception des postes de travail des machines non mobiles. Elle se fonde sur les connaissances ergonomiques et les mesures anthropométriques actuelles. La présente norme européenne spécifie les prescriptions spatiales pour le corps relatives aux équipements en utilisation normale, en positions assise et debout. La présente norme ne traite pas spécifiquement des espaces nécessaires aux travaux de maintenance, de réparation et de nettoyage.

This European Standard describes a procedure for analysing human activity in relation to specifying and refining the human component in the design or redesign of machinery and work systems.
NOTE 1   The ergonomics methodology described in this European Standard could also be applied to the design or redesign of products and non-work systems.
This European Standard is intended to assist project leaders in implementing human and physical resources, methods and schedules as well as in preparing the documents necessary to meeting related requirements.
The ergonomics methodology described can be applied to different stages in design projects involving either a “prototype”, "mock-up" or “special equipment”, whatever the industrial field or sector.
The objective of this European Standard is to achieve a solution that takes into account as many situations as possible with which users may be confronted. This will ultimately allow improved usability of the machinery and more robust technical solutions, combined with significantly greater system resilience, user autonomy and accessibility.
NOTE 2   Examples of the application of the methodology described in this European Standard are provided in Annex A.

This document describes the "Feedback Method", a method designed specifically to collect the contribution of machinery end-users by reconstructing and understanding how work is actually performed (i.e. the real work). This method can help to improve technical standards, as well as the design, manufacturing, and use of machinery.
By collecting the experiences of skilled users, this method can be used to reconstruct their actual work activities under different operating conditions and with any kind of machine. This helps to identify all the critical aspects having an impact on health and safety, or associated with ergonomic principles. Moreover, it makes it possible to identify some basic elements for defining the standards for machines and for their revision and improvement. It can also improve production efficiency and identify any need for additional study and research.
The method is designed to minimize the influence of the subjectivity of the facilitators and researchers in reconstructing and describing the reality of work, and to maximize the "objective" contribution of the skilled users of the machine.
The method combines a high level of reproducibility, sensitivity, and user-friendliness with low demands in term of resources, which makes it attractive to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
This Technical Report is addressed to standards writers, designers and manufacturers, employers-buyers, end users, craftsmen and workers, market surveillance and authorities.

This Technical Report establishes the ergonomic principles to be followed during the design process of mobile machinery with special emphasis on the aspects in which mobile machinery differs from static machinery. The ergonomic design principles given in this Technical Report apply to either or both seated and standing positions. This Technical Report is applicable for the design of mobile (self-propelled and towable) machines in order to ensure ergonomic working conditions for the operator. This Technical Report applies only to driving and operating mobile machinery and not to performing other tasks (e.g. sorters on a potato harvesting machine). Pedestrian-controlled and handheld machinery are not included. This Technical Report also applies to vehicle-mounted machinery when observing their functional properties e.g. mobile cranes. Installing, cleaning, and repairing of mobile machinery is not included. Basic concepts and general ergonomic principles for the design of machinery are dealt with in prEN ISO 12100 and EN 614-1 and EN 614-2. NOTE 1 EN 614-1 provides a framework for incorporating ergonomics principles in the design process. This framework helps designers to perform ergonomics analyses and design actions at the appropriate stages of the design process. NOTE 2 EN 614-2 provides principles of the design of the work tasks in interaction with machinery design. This framework helps designers to focus on the work task design and on the optimal allocation of work tasks between the operator and the machine.

This International Standard establishes the positioning of safeguards with respect to the approach speeds of parts of the human body. It specifies parameters based on values for approach speeds of parts of the human body and provides a methodology to determine the minimum distances to a hazard zone from the detection zone or from actuating devices of safeguards. The values for approach speeds (walking speed and upper limb movement) in this International Standard are time tested and proven in practical experience. This International Standard gives guidance for typical approaches. Other types of approach, for example running, jumping or falling, are not considered in this International Standard. Safeguards considered in this International Standard include: a) electro-sensitive protective equipment [see IEC 61496 (all parts)], including: - light curtains and light grids (AOPDs); - laser scanners (AOPDDRs) and two-dimensional vision systems; b) pressure-sensitive protective equipment (see ISO 13856-1, ISO 13856-2 and ISO 13856-3), especially pressure-sensitive mats; c) two-hand control devices (see ISO 13851); d) interlocking guards without guard locking (see ISO 14119). This International Standard specifies minimum distances from the detection zone, plane, line, point or interlocking guard access point to the hazard zone for hazards caused by the machine (e.g. crushing, shearing, drawing-in). Protection against the risks from hazards arising from the ejection of solid or fluid materials, emissions, radiation and electricity are not covered by this International Standard. The International Standard is not applicable to safeguards (e.g. pendant two-hand control devices) that can be moved, without using tools, nearer to the hazard zone than the calculated minimum distance. The minimum distances derived from this International Standard are not applicable to safeguards used to detect the presence of persons within an area already protected by a guard or electro-sensitive protective equipment.
