Overview
SIST EN 60503:1999 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and adopted by the CLC, focusing on spools for broadcast videotape recorders (VTRs). This standard defines the dimensions and nominal sizes of tape spools used in various broadcast video recording formats to promote compatibility, interchangeability, and consistent quality across the broadcast industry. Being crucial components in professional broadcast video equipment, standardized spools ensure reliable tape handling and playback infrastructure.
The standard specifically applies to tape spools used with broadcast video recorders, addressing different spool types (Types B, C, and transverse) and their precise measurements, which correspond to tape widths and recording formats employed in video production and archiving. SIST EN 60503:1999 builds on earlier versions and aligns with related IEC standards covering recording technologies and tape handling systems.
Key Topics
Scope & Objective
The standard applies to tape spools used with broadcast video recorders to facilitate international compatibility across multiple broadcast video tape formats. It aims at unifying spool sizes and dimensions for broad applicability.Nominal Spool Sizes
EN 60503 defines nominal spool diameters for:- Type C Spools (used with 25.40 mm tape width, e.g., 1-inch tapes)
- Type B Spools (helical video recorders, 25.40 mm tape width)
- Transverse Spools (50.80 mm tape width, 2-inch tapes)
Size options range from 164.8 mm (6.5 inches) to 397 mm (15.6 inches), covering various operational needs and tape capacities in broadcasting.
Spool Dimensions
The standard specifies detailed dimensions such as:- Diameter of hub and flanges
- Widths, heights, and tolerances in both metric and imperial units
- Construction details to ensure interchangeability and mechanical performance
Spool Types & Diagrams
Visual diagrams illustrate spool profiles for Types B, C, and transverse. These include dimensions labeled A through M to guide manufacturing and equipment interfacing.Normative References
The standard references key IEC documents such as:- IEC 60347 on transverse track recorders
- IEC 60558 on Type C helical video tape recorders
- IEC 60602 on Type B helical video recorders
Applications
SIST EN 60503:1999 is essential for professionals and organizations involved in:
Broadcast Video Production
Ensures tape spools are compatible with broadcast video tape recorders used in television studios and production houses.Equipment Manufacturing
Manufacturers of VTRs and related accessories use this standard to ensure their equipment handles industry-standard tape spools reliably.Archival and Media Preservation
Libraries and archives maintain videotape collections on standardized spools, enabling proper playback and longevity.Broadcast Maintenance and Repair
Maintenance teams rely on standardized spool dimensions to replace or interchange parts and avoid operational disruptions.
Related Standards
- IEC 60347:1982 – Covers spools for transverse track recorders, providing complementary specifications for 2-inch tape video systems.
- IEC 60558:1982 – Details requirements for Type C helical video tape recorders and their spool sizes.
- IEC 60602:1980 – Specifies Type B helical video recorders and compatible spool dimensions.
These linked standards together create a cohesive framework for broadcast videotape handling equipment, ensuring global interoperability.
By adhering to SIST EN 60503:1999, broadcasters and video equipment manufacturers can guarantee the use of standardized, high-quality video tape spools, crucial for maintaining video signal integrity, efficient tape handling, and maximizing the lifespan of broadcast videotape media. This standard supports ongoing international cooperation and technical consistency within the professional broadcast video industry.

SPOOLS FOR BROADCAST VIDEOTAPE RECORDERS (VTRS)
FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered resp
