kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026 is a CEN standard for the castor chair test on resilient, textile, laminate and modular mechanical locked floor coverings. It specifies how to prepare specimens, run a swivel castor chair test, and assess appearance change, surface damage, and stability for laboratories, manufacturers, quality teams, and specifiers who need comparable product data.

What does kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026 specify?

kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026 specifies methods for checking how a floor covering changes when a castor chair moves over it. The document covers textile floor coverings and also resilient, laminate, and modular mechanical locked floor coverings, including damage such as layer detachment, joint opening, and crazing.

The document is organized into 12 clauses and one informative annex:

Annex A is informative and shows how samples can be assembled in the test device.

What are the key requirements of kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026?

kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026 sets up a rotating-platform test in which three castors travel in epicyclical paths, with changes in direction, stops, and starts. In practice, that means the test is meant to reproduce repeated chair movement and concentrate the load on a defined stressed area.

What the apparatus has to do

Clause 5 defines the apparatus in detail. The rotating test platform must be large enough for the specimen support, and the castor assembly is offset from the platform centre so that the castors follow the intended path. The castor assembly is loaded with a total mass of 90 kg, shared equally across the three castors.

The drive mechanism runs the platform and castor assembly together, with reversing motion after a timed interval. The apparatus also uses suction to keep the surface clean during the test, which matters because dust and loose wear debris can otherwise affect the result.

Which castors and mounting methods are used

Clause 5 specifies Type H castors for textile floor coverings and Type H or Type W castors for resilient, laminate, and modular mechanical locked floor coverings, depending on the product requirement. The castor material, hardness, storage, wear condition, and replacement criteria are all controlled so the test remains repeatable.

Clause 5.8 also matters in practice because it governs fastening. Specimens must be held securely, but without horizontal mechanical forcing. For loose-laid products, the perimeter is restrained so the floor covering, underlay, and support do not move against each other.

How specimens are selected and prepared

Clause 7 separates the sampling rules by product type. Textile floor coverings are cut into semi-circles or quadrants, with reference specimens kept for comparison. For resilient floor coverings without mechanical connection systems, the sample must include joints in the castor path. For laminate and modular mechanical locked products, the sample must be assembled according to the manufacturer’s instructions and include at least one short-side joint in the test area.

Clause 8 then sets conditioning. Textile specimens are conditioned in the standard textile atmosphere, while resilient, laminate, and modular mechanical locked specimens are conditioned at controlled humidity and temperature. This matters because moisture and temperature can change dimensional stability and appearance.

How the test is run for textile floor coverings

Clause 9 gives three textile procedures: Test A, Test B, and Test C. Test A checks appearance retention at 5 000 cycles and again at 25 000 cycles, with a structural check for delamination or other damage. Test B checks colour change after 750 cycles. Test C checks structural integrity after 10 000 cycles and again at 25 000 cycles, with the suction device switched off.

These staged procedures matter because they let the user compare both early appearance change and longer-term structural damage. The specimens are cleaned and conditioned before assessment so the visual judgment is made on a stable surface.

How the test is run for resilient, laminate, and modular mechanical locked floor coverings

Clause 9 also gives a separate procedure for resilient, laminate, and modular mechanical locked floor coverings. The specimen assembly is installed either with adhesive or floating, depending on the product type and manufacturer’s instructions. The assembly must be level, with no excessive unevenness, and all three castors must contact the surface evenly.

For these products, the test focuses on whether the material breaks down visibly. Clause 10 records detachment of layers, opening of joints, cracking, and crazing, while ignoring simple flattening or gloss change.

How results are assessed and reported

Clause 10 uses ISO 9405 or ASTM D7330 for textile appearance assessment, and grey scales for colour change in Test B. Clause 11 adds a castor chair index based on the median appearance assessments after 5 000 and 25 000 cycles. That gives users a single comparison value for classification work.

Clause 12 requires the report to identify the product, the wheel type, the fastening method, the underlay if used, and any deviations from the test method. For textile products, the report also records the test type, damage, appearance retention grade, castor chair index, colour change, and structural integrity result.

What terms does kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026 define?

  • Appearance retention - the judged change in the look of a textile floor covering after castor chair loading, compared with the reference specimen.
  • Castor chair index - a classification value calculated from the median appearance assessments after 5 000 and 25 000 cycles.
  • Delamination - separation of layers in the floor covering, which is treated as damage in the test.
  • Crazing - visible cracking damage in a resilient, laminate, or modular mechanical locked floor covering.
  • Modular mechanical locked floor coverings (MMF) - modular floor covering products that are mechanically connected for floating installation.
  • Grey scales - the visual scales used to grade colour change in Test B.
  • Swivel castor chair - the chair type whose castors move over the specimen in the prescribed path.

Who uses kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026?

kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026 is used by flooring manufacturers, test laboratories, and quality control teams to compare product performance under castor chair loading. It is also relevant to product developers and specifiers who need to check how a floor covering behaves with chairs in service.

Buyers, technical reviewers, and certification or conformity assessment staff use the report to check whether a product shows appearance change, damage, or joint opening under a repeatable test method. That makes the standard useful when selecting products, comparing batches, or documenting product claims.

What changed in kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026 from the previous edition?

kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026 is the third edition. It cancels and replaces ISO 4918:2016/Amd 1:2018 and also replaces EN 985:2001.

The main changes stated in the document are:

  • adding modular mechanical locked floor coverings
  • better description of the machine
  • better description of the fastening methods
  • methods for testing MMF

Which standards are used with kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026?

  • ISO 139 - gives the standard atmosphere for conditioning and testing textiles.
  • ISO 1957 - gives specimen selection and cutting rules for machine-made textile floor coverings.
  • ISO 2424 - provides vocabulary for textile floor coverings.
  • ISO 9405 - is used for assessing changes in appearance.
  • EN 12466 - provides vocabulary for resilient floor coverings.
  • EN 12529 - specifies castors for furniture, including castors for swivel chairs.
  • EN 16511 - provides requirements and test methods for modular mechanical locked floor coverings.
  • ASTM D7330:2015 - offers an alternative method for assessing surface appearance change in pile floor coverings.

What does the kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026 document contain?

kSIST FprEN ISO 4918:2026 contains detailed apparatus descriptions, including the rotating platform, castor assembly, suction device, specimen support, and the two castor types. It also includes sample preparation rules for textile, resilient, laminate, and modular mechanical locked products, with separate layouts for joints and floating assemblies.

The document gives step-by-step procedures for the textile tests and for the resilient/MMF test path. It then explains how to judge appearance, colour change, delamination, cracking, joint opening, and other visible damage, and how to calculate the castor chair index for textile floor coverings.

The figures support the practical setup: the apparatus, castor path, joint positions, levelness checks, and evaluation template are all illustrated. Annex A gives an example of assembling the sample inside or outside the device, which helps laboratories set up the test consistently.

4 Principle
A floor covering, including one or more joints, treated or welded where necessary, is submitted for
a prescribed number of cycles to the action of three castors. The castors move in epicyclical paths with
multiple changes of direction, stops and starts, and the frequency of passage varies from area to area.
For textile floor coverings, three different assessment methods are specified:
a) the change in appearance is assessed after 5 000 cycles and 25 000 cycles in accordance with ISO 9405
(Test A) or ASTM D7330,
oSIST prEN ISO 4918:2025
ISO/DIS 4918:2025(en)
b) the change in colour is assessed by means of grey scales after 750 cycles in accordance with ISO 9405
(Test B) or ASTM D7330,
c) the extent of deterioration is assessed after 10 000 cycles or 25 000 cycles (Test C).
For resilient, laminate or a modular mechanical locked floor coverings, any damage to the specimen caused
during testing and visible as detachment of layers, opening of joints, cracking or crazing shall be assessed.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Rotating test platform
The rotating test platform on which the specimen is placed shall have a diameter of at least 795 mm (cicular
platform) or platform a length and width of at least 1 000 mm (square platform).
5.2 Castor assembly
This assembly comprises a vertical shaft, set in a bearing, and a plate on which the castors are mounted
(Figure 1, item 1). This castor assembly is offset at a distance of (198 ± 1) mm from the centre of the rotating
test platform.
The three castors are each arranged concentrically at 120° intervals around the centre of the plate at a
distance of (130 ± 1) mm from the centre of the plate, and are free to rotate, so that they follow the rotation
of the castor assembly.
The tested area of the specimen is determined by the distance between the axes of revolution of the castor
chair assembly and the specimen table and by the distance of the castors from the centre of the plate. This
area is approximately 0,3 m .
The apparatus is provided with a lifting device to raise the castor assembly above the test platform when
the apparatus is stopped.

5.3 Drive mechanism
The drive to the rotating test platform and to the castor assembly is interlocked and fitted with a reversing
mechanism. The number of cycles is set by means of a pre-set counter. The rotational speed of the rotating
-1 -1
platform shall be (19 ± 2) min and that of the castor assembly (50 ± 5) min .
After (180 ± 20) s of rotation, the platform shall stop and remain in the stop position for (5 ± 2) s, after which
time the direction of rotation of the rotating platform shall reverse.
The relationship between the rotational speed of the test platform and that of the castor assembly causes a
sharp reverse movement of the castors of about 160° at a point close to the outer edge of the stressed area
(see Figure 2).
5.4 Suction device
The suction capacity of the vacuum cleaner and the height of the suction device (Figure 1, item 7) should
be able to remove all abrased material or dust in a way that the surface of the test specimen is always kept
clean during the test. A suction capacity of (30 ± 5) l/s could be appropriate to reach this requirement.
5.5 Castors
5.5.1 General
Single-wheel swivel castors shall be used having the following dimensions (see Figure 3):
a) diameter of the wheel: (50 ± 2) mm;
b) width of the wheel: (20 ± 2) mm;
c) radius of curvature, R, of castor tread: (130 ± 5) mm;
d) crank distance: (32 ± 2) mm;
The distance between any two castor mountings shall be (225 ± 5) mm.

5.5.2 Type H castors (EN 12529), suitable for resilient, textile, laminate and modular mechanical locked
floor coverings.
Type H castors shall have plain wheels and a hard tread. The castor treads shall be made from polyamide,
with a surface hardness of (95 ± 5) Shore A and shall be stored under exclusion of light. The wheels
shall be one colour over their entire surface. The surface of the castors shall be replaced after maximum
2 000 000 cycles of the rotating test platform. It is advisable to replace them all three.
The castor treads shall be examined after each test to verify that they are still smooth, without any deep
scoring or encrusted hard particles. The tread shall be replaced if the dimensions of the wheel fall outside
the tolerances given in 5.5.1.
5.5.3 Type W castors (EN 12529), suitable for resilient, laminate and modular mechanical locked floor
covering.
Type W castors shall have resilient-tyred wheels and a soft tread. The castor treads shall be made from
polyurethane, with a surface hardness of (90 ± 5) Shore A and shall be stored under exclusion of light. The
surface of the castors shall be replaced after maximum 1 000 000 cycles of the test platform. It is advisable
to replace them all three.
The castor treads shall be examined after each test to verify that they are still smooth, without any deep
scoring or encrusted hard particles. The tread shall be replaced if the dimensions of the wheel fall outside
the tolerances given in 5.5.1.
5.6 Lifting device, to raise the castor assembly above the test platform when the apparatus is stationary.
