SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 300 019-2-0, a European standard in Environmental Engineering (EE) for telecommunications equipment. It introduces the test philosophy for environmental conditions and environmental tests, and it specifies the test severities and methods used to verify resistibility for equipment stored, transported, and used in the environments defined in Part 1.

What does SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006 specify?

SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006 gives the general overview for Part 2 of the EN 300 019 series. It explains how environmental test programmes are built, and how the chosen tests relate to the environmental classes defined in Part 1.

The document is organized into clauses 1 to 6:

  • Clause 1 - Scope
  • Clause 2 - References
  • Clause 3 - Definitions, symbols and abbreviations
  • Clause 4 - General
  • Clause 5 - Users guide
  • Clause 6 - Topics on making a test programme

Part 2 of the series is split into sub-parts for storage, transportation, stationary use at weatherprotected and non-weatherprotected locations, ground vehicle installations, ship environments, portable and non-stationary use, and stationary use at underground locations.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006?

Clause 4 states that environmental testing is for demonstrating that equipment can survive defined environmental conditions without irreversible failures and still perform to requirements. It is not a reliability test or a lifetime test, so it should be used to verify robustness, not to predict service life.

Clause 4 links the severities in EN 300 019-2-1 to 2-8 with the environmental classes in EN 300 019-1-1 to 1-8. The correlation takes account of failure consequences, performance requirements, and IEC 60068-2 test methods, which matters because test severity is chosen to match the intended use environment rather than to reproduce nature exactly.

Clause 4 also explains when no test is specified. Some conditions are covered by other tests, some are considered benign, some have no standard test method, and some are handled at the component and material selection stage. In practice, this helps a product team avoid unnecessary testing while still covering the relevant risks.

Clause 5.1 requires the test programme to state whether the item is powered-up and whether it is in-use during each phase. Storage and transport are normally not in-use, while working-environment tests are in-use; this affects packaging, mounting, heat dissipation, and the performance criteria that must be checked.

Clause 5.1.1 says in-use tests shall keep the equipment operational, except for the cold test, where the unit is powered only after temperature stabilizes. The product specification must define performance before, during, and after the test, so the acceptance criteria are clear before testing starts.

Clause 5.2 says the relevant severities shall be selected from the chosen classes, and non-relevant tests should be deleted. It also points to combined effects such as air temperature with solar radiation, and the effect of surface colour and roughness, which matters when a product is installed where heat gain or reflection changes the actual stress.

Clause 6 requires the test programme to reflect the actual product condition on the market. If the equipment is normally packaged, the storage and transport tests use that packaging; if it is normally mounted in a protective enclosure or with shock-absorbing buffers, the in-use test uses that arrangement.

Clause 6.2 and 6.3 give the practical test-programme rules: avoid over-stress in sequential testing, use identical sequences for comparable results, define what functions are checked before, during, and after conditioning, and state the failure criteria and actions to take if a failure occurs. The preferred climatic sequence starts at room temperature, then cold, dry heat, and damp heat steady state.

What terms does SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006 define?

  • Environmental class - a standardized set of environmental conditions used to describe storage, transport, or use environments.
  • Resistibility - the ability of equipment to withstand defined environmental conditions without irreversible failure and while meeting required performance.
  • In-use - the state where the equipment is operating in its working environment.
  • Not in-use - the state normally used for storage and transportation, with the equipment not operating.
  • Test severity - the selected level of a test condition used to verify resistibility.
  • Failure consequences - the importance of a failure outcome, used when selecting severities and acceptance criteria.
  • TR 100 035 - the ETSI Technical Report that gives guidance and terminology for environmental engineering and the test philosophy.

Who uses SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006?

SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006 is used by environmental engineers, test engineers, and equipment development engineers who need to plan environmental verification for telecommunications equipment. Vendors and buyers use it when agreeing on the applicable conditions, especially for special installation cases and microenvironments inside larger assemblies.

Quality managers and test laboratories use it to define test programmes, acceptance criteria, packaging conditions, and the functions to be checked before, during, and after conditioning. It is mainly relevant to telecommunications terminal equipment and related equipment that must be stored, transported, and operated in specified environmental classes.

What changed in SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006 from the previous edition?

The document history records Edition 1 as ETS 300 019-2-0, published in May 1994. It also records the later V2.1.2 publication, approved through the one-step approval procedure in 2003 and published in September 2003.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006?

  • ETSI TR 100 035 - gives guidance, terminology, and the test philosophy that should be used with the whole EN 300 019 series.
  • ETSI EN 300 019-1 (all subparts) - defines the environmental classes whose conditions are verified by testing.
  • ETSI EN 300 019-2 (all subparts) - provides the test severities and methods for the different environmental classes.
  • IEC 60721-2-4 - supports combined effects of air temperature and solar radiation, and the cooling effect of heat radiation.
  • IEC 60068 - provides the environmental test methods used as the testing basis.

What does the SIST EN 300 019-2-0 V2.1.2:2006 document contain?

The document contains an introduction to environmental engineering for telecommunications equipment, plus guidance on how to turn environmental classes into practical test programmes. It explains the distinction between in-use and not in-use testing, how to choose severities, and why some conditions are grouped or omitted in a programme.

It also includes the preferred climatic test sequence shown in Figure 1, and guidance on repeat testing after a failure. Clause 6 adds practical programme issues such as cost, test sequence, equipment state, and how to limit the number of checked functions without losing confidence in the result.

The purpose of environmental testing is to demonstrate that an equipment under defined environmental conditions can
survive without irreversible failures and perform according to requirements.
These tests are not reliability tests or lifetime tests.
The severities of testing in EN 300 019-2-1 to 2-8 [3] are closely correlated with the characteristic severities of the
environmental classes in EN 300 019-1-1 to 1-8 [2]. The transformation has been made taking into account failure
consequences, performance requirements and the graded test severities in IEC 60068-2 [5] test methods. In
